I need more space for archiving DV & also for backups.

I don't want to put more than 1 more HDD in my PC because its hot and quiet right now and I don't want it to get hotter or louder.

I'm not confident about the reliability of current gen disk that are bigger than 1tb.

So... I'm thinking my best option is 2x 1tb (70ish a piece) disks in the £100ish Icy Box NAS? For at total of about £240.

What do you think?

i know a lot of people who would rather use a NAS instead of a Desktop storage device. i suppose it is all down to transfer speeds and the availabiliy of having it accessible through LAN and internet aswell

You could look at getting one of these Sharkoon SATA QuickPort Duos as then you can still have 2 std drives attached, but easily removeable if you decide to mount internally or to swap over with more external one for even more storage. And at only £46 it's a fair deal cheaper than a NAS.

Or go for the single drive version and save another £10, you'll just have to swap the drives more often!

a question please:

if you are using the sharkoon through nas:

1) can you use ntfs formatted drives? the hard drives i would use are already full of stuff

2) can you change the hard drives in the nas without much hassle? (i.e. do the hard drives on the network change on the fly when you swap them or do you also then have to reconfigure the nas?)

u can use edgestore 10 box has usb and esata let u use 2 drives in raid or combined etc.

put ny 2 you want in it turns on off with pc or you can turn it on off as needed

or another one ministack v3 is a esata with firewire 400/800 either will add the storage use you need i use ministack with 2 tb in it...
