I have to get to Ashbourne tomorrow from Teesside, i've killed my car so that's not an option. I've planned a route using public transport as far as Stoke now, i get there at approx. 17.05. I now need local knowledge to get to Ashbourne the easiest way, avoiding taxis if possible. Can anyone help?

Thx

I can't help thinking a hire car would be a whole lot easier (for the whole round trip tbh), public transport in Stoke sucks at the best of times.

Put it this way, I wouldn't use it no matter what the hire car cost,I've lived in the Stoke area since 1984.

I'm only going one way, hire car is £65 + £200 deposit, i have to drop it off in Stoke and obviously fuel it too. Therefore i'll still be stuck in Stoke and needing to get to Ashbourne. Worst case i'll have to book a taxi.

Obvious question I guess :o but why not arrange a one way hire to Ashbourne??

A taxi won't be cheap, phone a few private hire firms for quotes, don't use the hackney rank outside Stoke station!

If it's any use, there's a local car hire company in stoke called 'Afford' that have been around for years and there is no deposit. I've hired a van off them before. One of their branches is within walking distance of the train station (if that's how you are getting here) but would take at least 20 minutes

Get a bus; two choices here

1 - direct from Hanley bus station to Ashbourne (Penine Express iirc)
2 - change at Leek

Can't remember bus numbers but they do go that way. Cost you maybe £5?

Shame you can't get there 2 hours earlier, I could have run you over!

I know he's just killed his Audi, but that's a very harsh punishment.... ;)

My daughter travels daily from Newcastle-under-Lyme to Leek via Hanley & it takes her over 2 hours on average, food for thought......

google maps, ashbourne, directions form hanley, click public transport.

You'll get a quicker route if you can arrive earlier (via leek or uttoxeter) but you can still there there later on via derby. Unsure of prices via derby, via leek would just be pmt first day so about £4-£5.

Can you get a train to derby? Seems closer.

Hi mate.

Stoke station is probably 20 mins walk to Hanley bus station. (despite it being called Stoke on treat, Hanley is actually the city centre. There's bus stops outside the station so just ask at reception at the station for the bus number into Hanley. They will be pretty frequent.

I've just had a look for you and from Hanley bus station the number 18 leaves every 20mins. Get off at Leek bus station. This takes around 45mins by bus.

That's the closest place to Ashbourne. There is a bus service that runs from Macclesfield - Leek - Ashbourne but it's just by Derbyshire council and seems pretty poor. Because of the time you'll be arriving in Stoke, the next bus journey you can get to Ashbourne is ay 7:50pm. That's the number 118 from leek bus station to Ashbourne station.

My best advice if you definitely can't use taxis would be to spend an hour in Hanley and get something to eat to wast a bit of time. Then get the 18 to leek at around 6:30pm, and arrive at leek around 7:15 in time for the 118 bus at 7:50 to Ashbourne.

Otherwise if it was me I'd go straight from Hanley to leek on the 18 and get a taxi from leek to Ashbourne. It's only around 20 min journey and saves waiting for the 7:50pm bus. I could find out a price for you from a friend if you want.

Train from Manchester to Stoke = £7, train from Manchester to Derby = £24ish.

Hi, that sounds great, i'm not going quite as far as Ashbourne, Swinscoe hill to be precise. Going to work at the dog & partridge if anyone knows it). I'll probably get bus to Leek then taxi from Leek, it's only about 5 miles from where i'm going.

Just ringing taxi firms now, it's only about £20 from Stoke station to where i'm going, that'll do!
