yer they will lol. never heard of a format? you can just put in the windows XP disc and from there format the HDD then re-install XP, i've had that problem before, was sorted by my above solution
 
Best thing as other people said will be to add some memory to it. 128 meg is really low! I used to have a Duron back in the good olde days and it had 256.

No... this is the thing with a corrupt ntfs.sys file... if you try to boot you will get a STOP BSOD... if you try to install from the XP setup disc it will BSOD as soon as it tries to access that HDD... if you try to format the machine will freeze as soon as it access that HDD... if you try to access the recovery console again it will either freeze or BSOD with a STOP error the moment it tries to access that HDD... you can take the HDD out and mount it as a 2nd disc in another machine and that machine will freeze as soon as you try to mount it...

If you reinstalled from a windows XP disc then your problem probably wasn't due to a corrupt ntfs.sys file... the ONLY way around this problem is to either lowlevel format the disc with an OS that doesn't support NTFS... use a linux boot CD with NTFS repair tool or use the windows server 2003 install disc to run chkdsk as for some reason the 2003 ntfs setup is different and works around the problem...

Go out and capture 50 flies, then release them all into the case and put the side back on.

Even one flying in and zapping itself when I had the side off left a burn mark on one component, so 50 should do some damage :p
 
What about getting an ignition system from an old gas fire, the push/click/spark type and using that to deliver a nice zap to the mobo? Would have thought that would do some serious damage and leave no visable trace?

bit late but nope, not had this problem, i have had it complaining about not being able to find the ntfs.sys file and i have been able to restart and select the dvd drive with has containted my xp install disc and been able to do a full format from there and then install a new copy without any stop BSOD's what so ever... maybe you were just unlucky?
 
put the cmos jumper on to short then put the side on it wont boot and ill bet my bottom dollar those tech guys in the it department wont spot it either it will just look like a failure of the machine :)
secondly it isn't damaging the thing and if anything is said deny all knowledge
 
open up the case and go over the mobo with a static-type feather duster. Nothing like static electricity to kill pc's

just ask for a better pc if you really need one or just upgrade the ram on that one or something... if you break it on purpose and get caught its a criminal offence

or put in a qtec/hiper power supply then install windows millenium edition.

If your IT dept are really dumb put a really low amp fuse in the power cable :p. Simple trick, but easily fixed if they try another lead :D .
