Best way to upgrade?

I don't have the cash at the moment to build a new system so I want to update slowly i.e buying a new piece of hardware every so often.

My current specs are E6750 2.6Ghz, 4GB DRR2 Ram and a 4850 512MB GFX Card.

I was thinking of firstly buying a DDR3 Mobo with some cheap DDR3 RAM But I'd have to make sure the mobo would work with the E6750.

Or should I just get a graphics card first?

Ideally I'd like to just go for the CPU first but my motherboard is a few years old now and it wouldn't support any of the new ones like the i3's etc.

So I don't really know where to start, any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

What is your motherboard and what are you mainly doing with it?? You might be able to run a second hand q6600 quad or a higher quad or the better idea would be a z68 borad i3 and 4 gig if ddr3 with an update to a i5 2500k at a later date.

A graphics card upgrade will do the most if your gaming like a 6850 (cheap pre-order from ocuk atm) or better a 6870 or a 560Ti as long as your psu is powerful enough to drive them(500w+ good brand).

Well I have a spare motherboard which is much better, still only a DDR2 Board but it is AM2. The mobo I have spare is a http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3107

You would then also need a new chip like a 960T (google it) which might even unlock into a hexa core chip as well or a second hand phenom 2 955/965 quad core but you will still need a better grahics card and maybe power suply

Thanks - How much do you think I could get a 2nd hand Phenom for? And my PSU is this -

Would this need upgrading before a GXF card to?

Like others said you probably need a new PSU, i'm cautious about mine and it's a bronze rated 80+ that actually performs like a silver rated 80+.

So yeah i would be even more cautious if i was you, get atleast a bronze rated, single rail (12v) psu.

No point in wasting money on socket 775 which is a dead end platform now. I'd buy a new video card first and then save up to replace motherboard, CPU and RAM all at the same time.

That PSU is high enough in wattage, but Hiper PSU's have a nasty habit of going bang and taking half your components out. So a quality brand PSU would be a good upgrade before you spend a wedge of cash on components that could get damaged by the Hiper going pop.

Ok I think this is what I'm going to do.

Use the AMD Motherboard I've already got now and get a 2nd hand Phenom Quad for it, then buy a GFX Card and then go down the new mobo+ddr3 route. :)

Cheers

When you do get a new mobo, CPU and RAM come back here. Currently, if I were you, I'd probably get a z68 mobo, i3-2100 and 8GB 1600MHz RAM if you were on a budget(<£330 prob for all 3 items) and then upgrade the CPU to an i5-2500K + Gelid tranquillo at a later date if you wanted better performance and to overclock but technology can change quickly so things may have changed by the time you get round to this.

Movies and minecraft and your on a budget looking for a snappier pc= get a quad cpu, then ssd, then gpu.
going from an e5200 to a q6600 was a massive leap, going from the q6600 to an i7 920 not so much. bf3 was a little noticeable but my other games not so much. getting an ssd has been the most noticeable upgrade getting a ~60Gb boot drive is well worth the £70ish.

Sweet. :)

I know you referenced a Q6600 but still would I notice a big difference going from a E6750 to a Phenom II Quad 3.2GHZ?

Cheers

I have upgraded from a E6750 to a Q6600 and I can vouch for the massive improvement. The Q6600 easily overclocks to 3.4Ghz (actually got it to nearly 3.8Ghz on air but it got a bit too hot for my liking) and they are fairly cheap on fleabay now.

Lots of new games utilise 4 cores now and its definitely worth getting if you intend to play BF3. However, if you are just playing minecraft then I might suggest upgrading for a SSD before CPU.

The SSD will really improve the general "snappiness" of your system.
