Best/worst airports you've been to?

Whilst I generally like Heathrow, one thing that annoys me is the crap catering once you clear security.

The most annoying time was when I had a 12pm flight to Melbourne. I just wanted some quick lunch. Fast food or a Subway would have hit the spot perfectly. But no - cannot be done. There was a TGI Fridays, a pub and various other expensive sit-down restuarants yet nowhere to grab a takeaway burger or something.

I mean seriously, who wants to sit down for a TGI Fridays prior to a long haul flight?!

Re Folks saying McCarran is terrible I assume they mean T2 ( which Virgin use ) , T2 is crap, T1 not bad

It's like a cross between a refugee camp and a homeless shelter with dossers kipping all over

Never had that issue, i found it quite nice.

I was going to agree but the more I red your post the more I began to think there is something wrong with you :p I also tend to enjoy airports as long as there are shops and an area to look around. I don't find them romantic though; and any airport that has few places to visit/pass the time I tend to get very bored.

It was a bit weird, perhaps. But I enjoy just sitting watching the World go by (with a beer) and wondering where all the people are going, why they are and things like that... I really do have a weird weird love for being in airports.

Best: Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) or Singapore (Changi)

KL is just painless. On our way out we literally checked our baggage in at KL railway station (about 30 minutes away from KLIA) jumped on a nearly empty KLIA Express shuttle and we were ready to go through security as soon as we got there. It's clean, painless and a model for all airports which is why its won so many awards no doubt.

Been there enough times and its always great.

Oh and you pretty much go past Sepang race track on the way out of the airport by car which is always a bonus.

Best: Schipol, Amsterdam. Great Airport with lots to see/do.

Worst: Taba, Egypt followed by Coventry. Coventry airport is nothing more than a dual carriageway with a portakabin next to it....

I haven't travelled that much so can't say any 'worst ariport' but I really like Oslo Gardermoen. Not so much because of the shops, the food you can get is okay. But because it's not very busy even at peak times and the staff are always helpful.

I can go oto the airport an hour before my flight and still be outside the gate with 15 minutes to go.

Obviously it's small compared to some of the ones mentioned here though :D

Well I haven't been at that many airports yet

Best: Zurich, clean not too big, smoking lounges and it's never as packed as heathrow :p

Worst I'd say heathrow on a Sunday and Berlin tegel was quite depressing

Best- Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok), loads to look at and do , clean, all mod cons, and fast service!

Worst- Heathrow and Gatwick , not the best advert for a welcome in to the UK!

Best -
There are none

Lagos: complete and utter crap hole but beaten by

Port Harcourt:
very small and you had to walk up the plane steps to ask the pilot where he was going.
When I was 16 I was returning home on my own and looked out of the plane window.
I then saw about 6 soldiers surround my Dad pointing rifles at him and they took him away.
I freaked out on the plane and ran to the steps where I started screaming and loads of soldiers pointed their rifles at me.
Because I wouldn't calm down they let my Dad come to me and he told me not to worry because they just wanted 'dash' (a little bribe).
It was 2 weeks before I received a message from him (a letter because there was no such things as phones back in 1974).

This was beaten by -

Dahome Airport.
It was the country next to Nigeria and we had to make an emergency landing there in 1978.
I was marched off the plane with a gun to my head (you got used to this in West Africa) and we were put in a pen.
After about 4 hours of no food, water or toilets I was desperate for a wee and I begged The soldiers who wouldn't let me even though the bog was 10 metres away.
Eventually I gave in and shouted "Je vais aux toilettes so kill me" and jumped over the barriers.
I'm still here but it started a chain of toilet goers and I had a rifle pointed at me for the next 4 hours until the plane could take off again.

Best: Dubai - So huge, so many things going on, so many amazing shops full of weird and wonderful stuff, and the overall 'futuristic' feel is great.

Worst: Indonesia - small, full of hawkers and people wanting to scam you. Hot and horrible, couldn't wait to leave.

Best -
Dubai: need I say more?
Schippol: same
Edinburgh: generally relaxed and efficient, clean with enough newsagents to buy whatever I want
Aberdeen: same

Worst -
SVO: when an old lady threatens to report you for asking the conversion rate from roubles to euros, you know you're in a ****hole
Charles De Gaulle: reaaaaaally dirty place.

I've flown in & out of:

Old Stansted
Faro (Old & New)
Rhodes
Malta
Miami
Orlando
Frankfurt (Hahn)
Chicago (O'Hare)
Dublin
Cork
New Stansted
Heathrow T2 & 3
Gatwick North & South

Best - New Stansted (when it 1st opened, not now though) :(.

Worst - Heathrow, Gatwick (too crowded & the staff treat you like cattle)
Frankfurt Hahn - its nowhere near Frankfurt for starters, Thanks Ryanair! & it was like stepping back into a cold war American airbase! :p
