Best XMBC Box

One to keep an eye on for the future maybe? AMD's new Carrizo chip has built in HEVC decoding. It's a mobile chip so should be spot on for small form factor HTPC's.

rpi2? i have openelec running on mine and can't fault it whatsoever.

Can the Pi carry DTS and DD over the HDMI port when using Kodi....?

I would need an audio extractor though as my sound system only has an optical connection.

With a larger budget what would be the best setup.

Or would it be better just to use a desktop. (I have a cellar which could house the desktop with the HDMI running straight to TV)

Currently playing around with KODI on my laptop. Now I've managed to sort the buffer/Cache issues its running sweet

The best setup is a Nuc IMHO. With a fanless case and a non-earthed power supply. Provide the media from a NAS. Use a hdmi cec USB adapter from pulseeight so you can continue to use your TV controls.

Put openelec on it, unless you really need something windows only.

Just check the cpu can do 24p, it was an issue with earlier ones.

Its going to depend on if you have a NAS or other server storage. If not then a dedicated HTPC build. If you do then probably a NUC

As above it depends on what you want, and where your media is stored. If space isn't an issue you can build a small lower power mATX/ITX PC for not much money that would allow internal 3.5" drives. Otherwise with a NUC you may be restricted to an external desktop USB drive for 2tb+ of storage.

I've still got this in my lounge going strong for about the same price as a NUC:

This pretty much hits the nail on the head. It's small, powerful and silent. The only downside is it's quite pricy

Yes, it can :)

Thanks for that. It seems to be able to do what I need then, wasn't sure about the DD or DTS thing though.

Last point does the Pi 2 have enough grunt to play 3D SBS type movies at 1080p....?
