bet365 boss pays herself £265 MILLION

I always find it funny that betting companies are allowed to advertise whilst we have banned the advertising for so many other "toxic" things. My favourite ones are the ones that pretend that the companies have your best interests at heart and really want you to stop when you keep losing money.

I assume its to try and push the narrative that they are responsible and care so very much about people gambling responsibly.

Why would that be the alternative? Look at Sweden, Norway, Finland, The Netherlands. They have followed policies to try to reduce inequality across their society. They are inarguably better places to live for the average person, whereas the UK is one of the most unequal places in the developed world. There are economic forecasts that suggest that in the next 10 years, the average person in Poland will have a better quality of life than in the UK.

Here's an interesting fact for you:-
Without any GDP growth, if the UK had the equivalent income distribution as the Netherlands or France, the median UK household would be something £9k a year better off. We're not talking about communism, just similar social policies to redistribute spending not just to the poorest, but to the *average* person.

Things like better education. Better childcare provision. Better local transport. How can you argue against that?

One of the biggest things we'd have to do is change taxes on unearned income (i.e. capital gains) to line up with earned income.

I just don't see how you can argue for the system we have now in the UK - who is it working for?

Oh wow, such an original and profound response. Why doesn't Venezuela just adopt the Norwegian model and get rid of all that poverty?! Why are all these countries around the world poor when they could just adopt the Scandinavian model?

I won't even bother reading the rest of your post because I guarantee it offers nothing

Come on, your argument is based on the idea that every country is the same. Perhaps the UK should model their economy on UAE with our vast oil reserves?

Its a very fair point to argue that we, as a first world, western economy should be looking at the countries that are similar to us and what they do well. We are not a poor country. We are not a country with the issues that Venezuela have.

It doesn't have to be a dichotomy. We don't have to be the USA and we don't have to be China. But we can look at what other countries are doing well and look to emulate, or take what we think works well there and apply it to ourselves.
At the moment the UK is a pretty middle of the road place to live as far as rich western democracies goes. But could we be better? A nicer place to live? 100%!

China also isn't even close to being a communist country. I don't think I have heard anyone seriously suggest that communism works either (not suggesting you are either). Its a weird strawman that people create when you suggest that extreme capitalism is a really bad idea.

To be clear though, the UK isn't Norway; Norway is closer to Saudi Arabia. Everyone points their finger at Norway as if we ever had the choice of adopting the same economic model. Norway and the UK had roughly the same oil reserves, except the UK has 13x their population. So obviously the money per capita we got from the oil reserves, even taking into account the fact that Norway handled their oil reserves better, would always be much less. Telling countries to adopt the Norwegian model is like telling a poor family "just be rich lol".
