Better to get lcd or plasma?

Why always? It's situational, and there are situations were a plasma is just not ideal.

I think both technologies have a place in the home and office. I also think they are both great to a point and both have advantages and disadvantages in certain environments and type of use they will be used for..

I'm sure if you read what I said in this thread I answer your questions..

I've heard that plasma requires periodic (every 2 years?) gas refills though?
I did my two plasma's last month :D

It easy to do..

1) take plasma off wallmount
2) put plasma with screen side flat on floor
3) Fart 3 times in rear vents
4) leave room for 30minutes
5) pick up plasma and place back on wallmount

A minor point maybe but don't forget that Plasma generally use a lot more electricity than LCD's..... good for warming up your room in the winter though!

I have one of the 2011 model Samsung LED back-light LCD's and I have to say that the picture is stunning and the brightness really helps with my already bright room and is great for watching stuff in 3d (in know many think this is gimmicky, but its pretty impressive on a 55" Sammy with a 8mm bezel!)

The weight can also be an issue as above. I can easily pick up and lift my TV (16.2kg) and its on a cantilever stand which can start to lean I have read if more weight is put on it (30kg and above). I would want a strong wall mount for a plasma!

My 50" V20 is around 37kg boxed but that's nothing - a reviewer on AvForums noted that his review model 65VT20 last year turned up on a pallet it was that heavy lol

I would say provided you have the right room setup then plasma will nigh on always give you the best picture etc etc

However if you've got a lot of windows which can't be blacked out then you might suffer with plasmas - although the anti reflective surfaces are getting much better they would still look pretty washed out in a brightly lit room with the wrong angle to the light source.

There is of course LED

We had an LCD in the living room and eventually upgraded it to LED.

Very thin at less than 4cm and light at less than 12 Kg (without stand)

The picture quality in the LED is miles above the LCD and by comparison I cannot seem much if any difference between our LED and next doors plasma.

Maybe abit of topic

About 7 months ago I was looking for a new tv. I was prepared to pay £1200 for a 3d on. So I started reading reviews and going around all the locale shops. I ended up with a £350 40” sony brava 3. TV’s at this time are not worth it for the normal consumer. You could spend thousands of pounds and it still will not be perfect.
My advice is: it doesn’t matter if its LCD or plasma, just spend as little as pos

Spend a bit more and get an LED TV, much thinner and will soon supersede standard backlit LCD entirely.

But if youre sticking to budget get an LCD, plasma is dead. Plasma has absolutely no advantage over LCD image quality wise.

Lately bought the Sony Bravia 52" LED 3D, impeccable, comparing it to both LCD and Plasma 52"'s, I'd take an LCD over Plasma if you can't extend to LED though.

Really? I've not compared the latest tv's but i always thought plasmas have the edge, so whats best for under £500?

Would be nice to see more recommended models for both lcd and plasma.

Wrong
plasma is not dead most companys pulled out of plasma production because they dont make as much money from a plasma as the do in lcd,
plasma has better blacks, better motion handling, better colour reproduction, better responce times!next you will be saying plasma need re-gassing and suffer screen burn LOL

if you enjoy watching movies how they were ment to be viewed and lots of sport get a Plasma
if you game for more than 8 hours a day and live close to the sun get a LCD

Exactly, A.K.A Plasma will be dwindled out in favour of Backlit LED TV's eventually.
I agree with the features you say are better on Plasma but imo for better future proofing LED is/will be the better technology.

Also like I said, its also down to asthetics, if you want a nice slim line, lightweight TV, get LED. If weight, depth or bezel size is not an issue then get a Plasma or LCD.
