Beyerdynamic T70

I'd forgotten about the Momentum. They do look very good, if a little pricey; but then Sennheiser has upped the price of their higher end products. The HD650 was about £180 six years ago, now they are about £280. £335 on the jungle site! My word. Now that is a monster price hike. As good as they are, I've have seen comments from some who own them, think they are not worth £280, let alone £330+. Those that paid £180 a few years ago, must have smiles on their faces. :p

Not looked into the MDR-1R at all. £160 on the jungle site looks interesting indeed. Trusted Reviews, had them priced at £300 and they are £300 on Sony's own site.

Now you say you don't need much bass, but if that were the case, then the K550 would have appealed more than they did. I assuming you got a good seal though, when I say that, as that is paramount. No seal with the K550 will result in poorer SQ.
 
I'm not sure how perfect my seal was with the K550 but it seemed okay, they are very big though and the pads are pretty big too. I can see why people have issues. I can't really try out the T70's in a store, but I can probably try the Momentum's and the Sony's, so will try and do that tomorrow. Sennheiser's price hiking antics are definitely a bit dodgy, but I guess people are happy to pay!

The Momentum's look a tad small, even though they're over ear (ignoring the cheaper on-ear variant), so I'll need to ensure they fit properly. They're £210 here which seems pretty reasonable. My ears aren't particularly big so I should be okay.

I really like the look of the T70's and I have found people praising the bass on them saying it's very deep but not boomy... whatever that means. I'm not an expert on these things. :( That chaps review on Head-Fi makes it sound as if they're pretty poor, but he seems to be alone with his sentiments, which makes me wonder if he perhaps had a dodgy pair.

I definitely think I'll be better off with closed rather than open, my girlfriends mech keyboard has blue switches and boy is that loud. :p
 
Reading one person's opinion on them who did praise the bass, found they needed to get a seal. Seems they may be similar to the K550 in that regard. Another person said it improved when they pressed the cups to their ear, so that may indicate the need a good seal.

As for Malveaux's review; well, it's his opinion, and as we know, opinions vary quite a bit when it comes to audio. I remember reading two very different opinions on a pair of Sony MDR-R10 headphones years ago. I think they were around $2.5k, and one person loved them, the other thought they were very overrated. I don't think Malveaux got a faulty pair, he just didn't like the signature of the T70.
 
Yes, you're quite right. It is a rather subjective thing most of the time.

With this budget there are quite a lot of possibilities, I'm concerned the Momentum's may be a bit small as I mentioned, but at least I can test them. The thin cable is a little bit off putting as well as they're obviously geared towards use on the go, which I won't be using them for.

I've noticed the Denon AH-D600 which I haven't read much about but it certainly looks interesting. The ear pads on them look ridiculously comfortable!
 
Oh, they have come down. Last time I looked at them, they were quite a bit more IIRC. Yes they do look very comfortable. I've got some D2000, which also have nice soft pads. I have to say, £200 is a nice price, when you consider the original RRP was £500. CNET reviewer said anyone seeing them at £200 should go quickly to the jungle site and buy them. :D They are very bassy though, more so then the D2000 it would seem.
 
They're £280 at the shop here so not quite that cheap (I'm in Norway so it narrows the options a bit, if I hadn't mentioned before)!

I'll certainly read up on them as much as I can, but the more I read on the T70's makes them sound better and better, aside from that negative review on Head-Fi. The fact they're 'cheap' is a big plus too. Anyway I've yet to rule out the Momentum's and MDR-1R's!
 
Ah! ok then. :) Best to try what you can first. Ideally it would be fantastic if one could walk into an audio shop and try any headphone. Sadly it isn't as easy that.
 
I recently replaced my DT990's with a set of T90's and have been very impressed with them. I'm not sure if they're within your budget but they're significantly better than the T70's I tried.

I had looked at them, I can get them for £370, which seems pretty reasonable.

The Denon's which may now be the frontrunner are about £100 less, and I imagine they aren't as good as the T90.

I just don't know if I'd find them to be that much better... Hmm.
 
Not easily but I can try asking the shop with them for sale if they have a pair for me to test (it's quite a drive though). They are the ones with the T90 too so I could maybe compare if they'll allow it.

In theory they should be similar as it's just closed vs open isn't it? The T90 does seem to get a lot more praise though.
 
Yeah, the T90 are open, but that can change the sound, even with the same drivers.

This is taken from a review of the T90 on Headphonia:

'Compared to the T70 we reviewed earlier this T90 has the more airy presentation making it sound even more detailed. The T70 already is very detailed, here it just sounds more detailed because of the airy sound. The T90 however is less sharp and less aggressive sounding and has the 3-dimensionality and staging. It sounds more relaxed and it is definitely a better all-rounder. While the T70 was very strong with classical music, T90 is strong with everything. Especially the mids section is really different from the T70 and that combined with the open and airy sound makes it a whole new headphone.'

Sounds like the T series style in this case lends itself better to open headphones, which is probably why they've kept the £100 mark up on the T90. :p

I shall ponder it further, if the Denon's were £200 I'd think more about trying them, but I think they're a little expensive at £280 (even though they should cost even more, it's just Amazon have them up cheap). I also think the Beyer's should be better overall, but perhaps not when it comes to "boomy bass".

I kind of want the T1's but there's no justifying that for what I use, the better half would kill me. :eek: They are a fairly reasonable sounding £650 though.
 
I was looking to get the T1's but decided it just wasn't worth it over the T90's. I listened to both and found the differences to be not that great, at least to me.

Not even close. I was actually going to buy them until I tried the T90's, they're a very good pair of headphones for the money (although T90's aren't cheap by any stretch).

Have a listen, headphones can be a very personal thing, even down to the way they fit or feel. Personally, I prefer the earpieces on the DT990's but hate the way they clamp to my head compared with the T90's.

That's the thing with audio, the higher up you go the amount you pay gets more and the gain gets smaller. At least that's the theory. Ultimately though, only the listener can decide whether or not something costing twice as much or more, is worth that extra cost.
 
Going to try and test the T70 and T90 on Monday, definitely think the T90's will be better in theory, so will most likely get them... exciting. :cool:
 
I think you'll be sold on the T90's, glad I suggested them now :)

That said, the T70's are a great set of headphones too. Let us know how you get on!

Next step will be an amp for you.... it's a slippery slope. I run a Valhalla tube amp with my T90's and love the warmth and width of the soundstage, especially for gaming.
