BF2 = joke.

BF2 isn't an infantry combat simulator. You can't behave in game as you would expect to behave in real life. The sniper combat in this game is a clear example of this. Most new players who get into sniping in BF2 almost always begin by camping about (mostly on rooftops and hill sides) and taking potshots at random people whenever the oppurtunity arises. This is a really poor strategy in BF2, not only do they end up with a tiny amount of kills, but they're pretty much sitting ducks for the experienced snipers and anyone half decent with a rifle.

The best method for maximising your kills and also getting a fair amount of teampoints, whilst playing sniper is to actually stay on the move and follow your squad around. Move from point to point and keep surveying your area, including points of entry and camping points for other snipers. Never stand still unless you are 100% sure you are fully covered. Also stay behind your squad if you are moving into a dense, close quatered area since they definitely have the advantage up close ... or better still take a different route into the area, so as to get a better vantage point and less attention for yourself. You also have to know the maps inside out when you're a sniper because the best kills come when you know where the enemies are coming from and where they normally take cover.

Finally, learn how to hit prone and instantly aim for the head, since 90% of the time when you encounter the enemy, they will do the same and since your sniper rifle is a lot more accurate you can normally headshoot them first.

Oh man, that brings back happy memories. I always used to drop jeeps on people as a commander. Particularly useful on Wake Island when you have the enemy down to its last base on the island, and one enemy decides to swim accross to the other side. Always dropped it on them as they were just getting to the other side :D

As i'm sure this is also a view held by many, it highlights what's wrong with PC game 'sniping'. What you've just described doing is a Designated Marksmen Role. A team player with a more accurate rifle to provide longer range support.

A sniper is someone who will lay concealed often behind enemy lines, relaying valuable information to their commanders and approaching forces. Now as most games don't actually have a proper command structure, the actual role of a 'sniper' is pointless. You really will just end up sat in a bush for an entire game killing nothing.

Not to mention snipers rely on the huge dense expanse that is our world and more everything in it. Sniping simulation really will only improve when maps are HUGE and graphics are good enough to allow someone to be truely concealed, with game time long enough to make use of hiking into a good position for 2 days. Best thing to do is grab an M4 and get stuck in, it's far better suited to online FPS :)

I agree, especially on the stealth/concealment aspect of BF2. I've pretty much given up on trying to conceal myself behind bushes, darker areas and distant roof tops because:

a) The BF2 engine's scaling system (i.e. less graphical complexity the farther an object is) means that infantry show up as easily identifiable "blobs" against terrain that seems to resemble melted hills of wax.

b) A large portion of the bf2 "elite" turn off shadows, so trying to hide in the shadows is ******* hopeless.

That said, I still think sniper class is the most fun class in BF2 and if you exploit the lack of realism enough, you can easily rack up silly amounts of kills and very high K/D ratios. Plus the satisfaction you get from headshooting medic whores is endless.:D

Sniper is a platoon level asset and operate in a specialist capacity away from normal operations afaik. Marksman is squad based so yea like the guy with a machinegun etc, but obviously the sniper image is cooler so they went with that.
A 50 cal is fired when prone afaik, standing up would be terrible for accuracy and maybe knock yourself over when firing

All sorts of things are wrong in bf2 like that but they never intended it to be accurate, just fun. People never use the voip or squad tactics in games Ive played, its wasted on them apart from spawning exploits, etc
If you want a fun 20 mins, play bf2 or if you want 3 hours walking in the desert calling in A10 jdam air support to nuke a tank killing your squad from a mile away, play pr :p

I heard someone in pr say turning off shadows is bad because movement is less obvious, not sure what they meant

Some objects scale with the bf2 engine, any polygon object like a building with air conditioning on top. You can hide behind that or sometimes you can get a bush or tree which is built to scale, but you will have to learn which

Tried about 20 different servers today after playing for the first time in months.

Cant believe how utterly **** it is.

Sat there sniping happily when a jeep lands on my head. shrug it off.
Move position, and it happens again. annoyed now.
spawn killed about 10 times - raging
Move position yet again. Artillery on me. Veins popping out my head.
spawn killed about 10 times - screaming abuse
Again, move, artillery on me. Feel like uninstalling the ****.

Im sick of either having jeeps land on my head, commanders using their infinate artillery strikes on a lone sniper, bunnyhopping, dolphin diving, or just generally being spawn killed as soon as I spawn.

Absolutely ******* *******.

Vent over.

Play IO!

I headshotted someone mid bunnyhop the other day, then told them it didnt help them :p

try =BBUK= very good admin but all server have there own smacktards

Apart from when you have your queuing system on so i wait for a jet for ages then get in it only to be kicked by the bbuk admin who was at the back of the queue for not letting him have it...

A trick is to turn down the graphics (cant rememeber which setting), so the enemy sniper is hidden in a bush, but on your pc he is in the open as the bush/grass or whatever isnt there:p

I agree with titaniumx3's comments. I am a sniper often- if I see someone I just stand in the road and shoot, as over 50% of the time the enemy is a tard and I headhsot him easily.
I get annoyed by arty, but infantry only maps result in stalemate on karkand and jalabad, with a huge nade war going on.

I have circa 30000 points, but up to 10000 points I was rubbish. This was my first online shooter and it took me a long while to get good.
EDIT: Another trick I have is to use the sniper that is like the USA one but is grey (think its of special forces), as it can be used by both teams- How many times have you heard a sniper and thought 'thats a MEC sniper'??
