BF3 Beta FPS thread

In regards to my previous postings about my fps dropping out after about 5-10 minutes of play when running in xfire.

Rather randomly I found the issue!

I went to downgrade my drivers to 11.8 to see if that solved the issue, only to be told that I didnt have a 64bit operating system...

Seems in my eternal wisdom, when installing windows 7 on my new rig, I incorrectly selected the 32bit version :| (seems the 11.10 drivers dont warn you about having a 32bit operating system when you install the 64bit version)

I have now reinstalled the 64bit version of windows, installed the latest 11.10 drivers, and no more stuttering!

I'm using 64-bit Win7 but like I said I'm gonna check tonight to see if the stuttering has gone

I'm running the game on High/Ultra (textures on High due to only 1GB GDDR5, a couple of other things on High) with 2xAA. Runs quite well with Catalyst 11.10 Preview, which is the only driver I've tried. Never have any noticeable slowdowns, though I haven't actually measured the FPS. I have definitely noticed that 2xAA is not nearly as effective in BF3 as it is in many other games; usually I'm quite happy with just 2x but here there's still a lot of visible aliasing on things like stairs.

Prepare to be blown away lads!
Decided to see why my beastly 8800gt would make of it :p... and actually it doesn't run too bad! Haha. Have to set everything on low, of course, but get between 30-40fps. That's at 1680x1050, with a Q9550 and 4Gb RAM.

So there's hope for people with old systems, who aren't too bothered about having it on high settings... Although I have a 6990 coming soon lol

Well, I set everything to low and you know what? It looks near identical on my 280. Lack of DX11 perhaps?
Anyway, FPS is massively improved, probably getting about 60 avg now.

Tested again wit High preset and getting 70fps outdoors minimum. No stuttering/freezing at all, and MSI now shows 1780MB VRAM being used rather than 1988MB. Something has changed in the Beta as I haven't changed anything on my computer.

Does anyone know if it will be possible to change your soldier name like you could on BF2? Don't really want my origin name to be my in game name.
i was told by EA support while changing my Origin name (same issue as you) that you can select gamer name at the start of BF3.....well see. i still changed my origin name just in case...

Yep, working well here too now. These are the setting I'm using on my 5850 xfire;

And this is the Afterburner graph from one full round from the beginning of the map until the end, apologies for the width of the image I thought it was relevant;

It doesn't look perfectly smooth but there are no big drop outs and it feels very smooth in game. I'm pretty sure that vsync would flat line that at 50fps.

You can all poke fun at my 10-15 fps and often it says just 2!!

I was reading an artical about the memory usage, about 2gb for origin the browser plug and the game :eek: No wonder im struggling.

CF5850 performance has been all over the place for me. Was epic a few evenings ago, last night sucked, not changed anything in my setup/settings. Game actually ran better with 1 5850. Going to jump on in a minute. Where the fudge is Caspian Boarder EA?! Don't know how many more rounds of Metro I can stand

Interesting read but it doesn't discuss the resolutions I referred to nor does it compare HBAO vs. SSAO performance. Also it defines a 44.4fps average (35fps min) as 'playable' but whether or not somebody finds this optimal or particularly 'playable' is a matter of opinion. I am sensitive enough to quite literally 'feel' the difference between 50fps and 60fps and indeed beyond this (on a 120Hz monitor). Actually when I first tested out the game I had the settings up very high and thought it felt sluggish - turned on FRAPS and realised the framerate was around 45fps in the 'sluggish places'. It comes with the territory when you spend a lot of time reviewing monitors and I'm sure many people are comfortable with a 45fps average. I really wish I was as I would enable MSAA like I said. ;)
