BF3 Beta FPS thread

Puts up a pretty good fight at that res. Another 6950 should make that very playable once the drivers have been sorted out, maybe even with a few settings set to Ultra.

I'm quite happy with the fps as it is although having 45 minimum and 60 average would be preferable in this game.

Hopefully the new drivers will be able to improve the performance even further, with the game being pretty well optimised for high-end PCs.

There isn't much difference between the Ultra and High presets so I would prefer to have higher framerates in any case. :)

I have decided (perhaps rather foolishly :D) that I want my minimum fps to be around the 60 mark.

So my 6950 Toxics will be arriving soon. :D

2560x1440 - High Preset

You say high preset? Does that mean you are leaving AA on?

At the resolution turning AA off will yield a significant performance boost, and you probably wont be able to notice the jaggies too much

High preset means no multisampling but post processing AA effect which doesn't yield that much performance hit and is a must in any game. :P

Battlefield 3 Beta seems to be not that CPU demanding.

It only loads 3 out of 4 cores fully which means that you will get the most by overclocking your tri-core/quad-core CPU rather than investing in a hex core. (I've seen posts with people wondering whether to upgrade their CPU or not)

The importance of the CPU scaling is even lower when you up the resolution/AA as the game because severely GPU limited.

Still trying to find more comments on CPU scaling with this game.

Hmm, thanks for that. I was consdering a combined CPU/GPU upgrade but knowing that I might try to get away with just the GPU.

Also interesting was this quote:

Acording to “Global Battlefield Community Manager at DICE” the beta build is well behind the retail build and most of the bugs are already fixed (source). So what is the real point of this beta if not to fix issues? Why not update it to the latest build and work from there? Apparently this is no beta, it’s a demo

I know people said that was probably the case, but really? You want to represent your flagship game with a version which you know is full of bugs that have already been fixed? They needed fixed for a reason. Yeesh.

Has the Beta been updated? I can now play at High preset with AA on High too and get 70fps outdoors and 100fps indoors with no stuttering/freezing. Checked MSI Afterburner and it shows both my 5850s are at 99% usage so crossfire is working.

I'm pretty sure this is mostly a server stress test than anything, seeing how servers cope with 64 player Caspian border and 32 player Metro action. I've been dropped a couple of times randomly due to "timing out" but nothing major.

Also the huge FPS drop when using crossfire has dissapeared  I enabled both cards again and tested it for a good hour or more and no stuttering and super smooth gameplay. Weird. Massively looking forward to the final retail version, really enjoying this game.

Anyone else finding that graphics issues and crashes are less in BF3 compared to BC2 already?

Really pleased with my new 6950 crossfire setup and by the looks of things it can only get better with more mature drivers, etc.

I'm not sure if you guys have seen this Battlefield 3 Beta Performance Test?
http://www.techspot.com/review/448-battlefield-3-beta-performance/

I'm basically ****ed without SLI @ 2560x1444 :D :(
Hopefully the final version will be a bit more optimized...

Interesting. I would have liked to see some testing at the increasingly common 16:9 resolutions such as 1920 x 1080 and 2560 x 1440. Also perhaps some testing in their 'high' configuration but swtiching HBAO to SSAO (minimum visual impact compared to performance gain). At 1920 x 1080, using the 'high' preset, AA post 'high' and SSAO my overclocked 6950 very rarely slips below about 55fps. I would say a solid average of around 60fps which is what I was aiming for. This contrasts with the average 41fps in the review which for me isn't all that playable on this game. I wish I found it was because I get that kind of average frame rate with a AA deferred set to 2x. I certainly find the visuals nice enough with AA post on high and AA deferred off and can put up with some jaggies in places given the performance benefits. Even with MSAA on 4x there are jaggies in places (particularly the distance) anyway.

Which driver are you guys using?

OK, thanks. I have the 11.10 preview drivers installed at the mo but haven't played the beta since last week because of the fps drop outs on xfire. Going by what you two have said it's probably worth giving it a try now.
