BF3 Beta FPS thread

I have the same rig but by I get extreme stuttering when the 1GB VRAM has been used up on my primary 5850, are you getting that same problem? The only way to get rid of this is to put shadows on low and turn off AA

Yea, I had the settings higher and I would experience stuttering where frames would drop to 2-3. The settings I have now I don't have this issue.

So I'm playing at 2560x1440 on a GTX 480
Seems like I'm better off going sli GTX 480 than upgrading to a GTX 570 or GTX 580 or do people not agree?

I'd disagree purely due to my personal opinion that SLI and crossfire are both still unmatured technologies and how well they work varies so wildly between different games and situations. Basically my thinking is, you get a 580, you get excellent performance across ALL games, you buy a second 480 you get good performance boosts in some games, but not all.

In an ideal world those of us playing at that res would have the 3GB model 580 :p

Noticed your FOV is 70, I can play the game in almsot everything on Ultra at that FOV. Change it to 90 and see how you go.

It's strange becasue the settings you posted in the screenshot are the default ones when the game first loaded, are you still playing at these or have you lowered since then and if so what did you lower?

Especially with the beta being so random when it comes to SLI and crossfire performance. It will hopefully be better optimised for the final release but don't expect to get a 2nd 480 and have double the frame rates.

Phenom II 955 @ 4GHz
6950 2GB @ 840/5200

With afterburner OSD and medium settings I never go below 60fps outside, with it topping 100 indoors.

This drops down to 40 min outside with high settings.

I was reading somewhere that you have to exit a game for new graphic settings to take effect.... is this true? If so.... arse!!!

Its hard enough to get into a game, let a lone leave and enter again!

I'm confuzzled. I changed from low to ultra, and NOTHING. Like, FPS was identical :S I think you are right sir!

If I increase the settings I get a lot of stuttering - where the fps drops to 2-3 momentarily. Curious how you are able to avoid shuttering with everything turned up.

Edit: Just turned pretty much everything to ultra but left AA deferred off and stuttering didn't occur. Will test again soon with AA deferred on.

I changed the FOV to 70 which is the default. It looks a lot better on everything Ultra and was getting around 100fps. But with a FOV of 70 its serious disatvantage playing online

Because it isn't a card killer. It has been hyped up massively in order to drive hardware sales, particularly when it is not that long before we see the next generation of GPU's early next year.

People like to buy into it as well because in their minds it justifies them using two 580's in SLI at 1920x1200 on a single monitor.

'BF3 will NEED 2x580 in SLI to run at ultra settings at 60fps' will it ********.

lol either you failed somewhere or you just fail in general

a single 580 is getting around 45 fps @ 1080p on at 30" native res even dual 580s would seem to struggle.

I'm on a 580 on a 27" at 2560x1440, my FPS hasn't dropped to 45 once. 48 was the lowest, average was 60. 30" is no doubt 2560x1600 though and perhaps that extra size is filling the vram on a 1.5gb card?

@mrbios and JamesM
Ok thanks for your response. Might hold off and buy a GTX580 3GB later ;) First I'll see what my GTX 480 runs like when the final game comes out and how I like windowed mode...

Could also just nick my girlfriend's Dell 23" 1920x1080 :D

@mrbios: What settings do you use, low-med-high-ulta? FSAA/AF?

Im tempted to get a Gainward GTX 580 Phantom myslef, but I think its silly to shell out just yet. The Final build might run better, I just really really want to play with everything on High and low AA without the VRAM issue causing it to stutter/freeze

Are you on a 27" 2560x1440 aswell? If so what frames do you get with that 5850 cf?

Full list of my settings:
2560x1440
Ultra on all (though people keep saying ultra isn't really ultra in beta, so it might just be high!)
AA off - doesn't seem to make any real graphical difference at this res
AF 16x
HBAO
motion blur off

1.5GB GTX580, 2500k, 8GB ram, games running off an SSD not that i guess that really matters

Not sure if i'm missing any settings there, when i get home from work later i'm going to try testing FPS with things like hbao off etc. See if there is any real benefit of having it on.

EDIT: only thing i will say, if you get a GTX580.....get one with a non-reference cooler!!!! they run damn hot with the reference cooler.

Ok thank you for making this list, really helps me. When I get home tonight I'm gonna test my framerates on my GTX 480 + Hazro HZ27WC on 2560x1440/1920x1080 and I'm gonna look at the cpu scaling atm mine is on 2.66Ghz, I reckon upping the ghz to about 3.2 or even 4ghz might add some fps... Maybe I'll post it tonight :)

Nope Im on a 22" 1680 * 1050 and getting around 80fps average, never drops below 60. Both 5850s are at stock. I happy with the framerate but want to play at Ultra/High settings, I think the only way is to sell my 5850s and get a 3GB GTX580, but IM holding fire until the final release as it may be better optimised
