BF3 min/rec specs show as follows.......

Hope this title lives up to all the hype but needing £600 worth of gpu's to play a game as the developers intended is a bit of a joke. I'll wait for the next gen cards and hope then that a £300 card will equal 580gtx sli. No £30 game is worth buying a new card right now, my 5870 maxs everything else i play right now, and won't need to change for mw3.

I agree with what you are saying, but consider this:

Whenever a rig killer comes out, and it's highest settings are beyond what any of its rivals can achieve with hardware demands to match, you're not upgrading for that one game.

You're upgrading to run that game smoothly and also for games that haven't come out yet but will match BF3's level of visuals over the next couple of years.

If every game that came out was a rig killer and required upgrading to the latest and greatest hardware every couple of months or so, then granted, it would be ridiculous. But after BF3, there will not be another game as demanding for some time, as rig killers are a rare exercise by game developers. Therefore, your upgrade will still be smoothly running games when the average level of visual fidelity catches up to BF3.

I could be completely wrong but that's pretty much what happened with Crysis. :D

So if a single 580 will only give you 'medium' settings, what the hell do you need for ultra? quadfire/sli 6990/590's and a pair of 4ghz xeons? (A little over-exaggerated but I can't be fair away from right).

I can't help but feel a little trolled by EA/Dice at the moment, maybe there in cahoots with AMD/Nvidia to try dupe people into throwing loads of cash at cards they otherwise wouldn't think twice of buying.

Edit: Just seen the tweet that its for 'high' rather than medium settings, there is still hope for my 6950's!

Ultra will be at a guess unplayable on most rigs purely as its EA's way of getting into bed with Nvidia and making people get new cards when the next gen are out - there is no way its going to run perfectly fine on ultra as there will be no need for new cards so expect ultra to be a slide show.

Unlikely. Those that spend that much on cards will always look at benchmarks first, or already have them for multi-screen set ups, and if not, they must have money to burn. :)

I reckon BF3 is like the new Crysis; runs well and looks great on Medium, but can go much higher if the hardware grunt is there.

Minor rant:
Before anyone says "Duh Crysis was unoptimised" the only optimised part of that game was the memory leak, which was unacceptable. But as far as graphics go, it was pretty efficient, given the task it was given. You can't program direct to metal when you have to cater for multiple configurations, and it didn't cheat with any pre-baked effects that consoles have to use. It was a monumental achievement, especially considering it is a sandbox game.

im not even going to depress myself trying ultra on my 580.

just gonna set 1920x1080
detail on high
AA to 4xMSAA

and hopefully...... run it quite well. fingers crossed :(

Either this or as I said in an earlier post, it may just be that BF3 has some insane mode that no-one in there right mind will use, much like ubersampling in the witcher 2 and DOF in metro. Just for e-peen's sake.

Going to feel really sorry for those who end up buying second cards for xfire and sli and end up with micro stuttering like in bbfbc2, just so they can play the game at a decent level of detail. Would have been a good time to bring out a new card but a guess both red team and green team have a lot of old stock to shift yet? Also what do you need for 3 screens with ultra settings, lol

Had a few sli setups over the years, no problems with my current 470's, or previous 275's, did get a bit in the early days of sli with 6800gt's.

My feeling is that we're all overshooting the GFX requirements.

Just because the systems Dice used to demo the game were SLI 580's - they're hardly going to showcase their brand new game on a system that just about cuts it, of course they're going to go overkill with the set-up.

We'll just have to wait and see how the Beta plays out.

Has anyone tried playing The witcher 2 on 'ULTRA' it stays around the 20's fps on my system with GTX580 but if u go into the settings set ultra then just turn somthing called 'Ubersampling' off it runs perfectly fine (40 minimum fps but mostly around70's) and i couldnt see a difference at all in the visuals its a very nice looking game, maybe this will be the case with BF3?

I don't know how comparable Metro 2033 is to BF3 since the large majority of BF3 is open and Metro is very much enclosed. On Metro I'm running 40-50 FPS fine on maximum settings without DoF so maybe there is hope.

Wishful thinking on my part perhaps?

So back to my original question?

Hmm ok may be a silly question so please forgive me in advance for asking :)

I have a complete watercooling setup for my cpu and both my 4890's in crossfire.

Now I know these cards are not dx11 but dx10 but apart from that will BF3 run ok, or is it time to upgrade, nearing in mind it means i have to either change my seteup and just water cool my cpu or buy blocks for any new cards I get but I think I may not water cool the cards as I think newer cards these days have better cooling right?

Advice would be greatly received, and what card would you recommend if i do need to upgrade that will last me a year or 2 for any other upcoming demanding games.

Advice please?

I would wait and see

chances are medium looks as nice as bc2 and proberly best to upgrade once your played the beta at least
