BF4 - 7970 CF - Low GPU usage

So looks like I've got some sort of issue with BF4 - which may BF4 fault which means I'll have to wait for a fix but could also be something I've done thought I'd share it. Would also be interested to see if anyone else has it.

Spex are
4770k @4.5
8Gig system RAM
7970 CF
Giga UD3H
1440p

Now when I'm in BF4 my GPU usage of both cards doesn't go about 40% and CPU usage is about 60% but I'm struggling around with FPs down in the 30s all the time.

I've tried wiping Gfx drivers and are now using the latest betas but still same issue. I actually get better and smoother play when CF is disabled.

Anyone seen anything like this elsewhere or any other suggestions?

Have you disabled ULPS? If you haven't try that via afterburner first.

Are you running gpu-z? If so stop unless you're using the new version released yesterday.

What OS are you using?

Take a look at this. Setup some gpu overlays so we can see what's going on. Play the game for 5 minutes then take some screenshots of the game/overlays running so we can see whats what. It would be handy to see core clocks and gpu usage numbers. Take a screenshot of the afterburner gpu usage graphs as well.

ULPS is already disabled

Not running GPU Z

On Windows 7

I've tried setting up OSD with afterburner but never seems to come on. I'll load up SS of graphs from afterburner but the FPS doesn't work.

Separately I tried disabling my page file and BF4 instantly crashes. (well 1 -2 min then crashes)

You should follow the guide i posted in that thread. It makes setting up an OSD profile and getting it working as easy as can be.

You should leave the page file on Auto for now.

couple of SS of afterburner.

[See below]

Ok to me those aren't working but no idea for anyone else

Use IMGUR. Upload the images there and post the [ IMG ] tag link.

Will try it.

I've gone back through the OSD info but still doesn't work. Doesn't seem to switch on. only FPS I get is when I do perfoverlay.drawfps

So tried turning off Vsync and obviously higher fps as going above 60 but also now seems to drop below 40 less.

Yes the overlay won't work on BF4 as its a 64 bit application.

I need to see the gpu usage as well. Don't worry about the cpu usage for now.

GPU usage is around 40% on second SS.

Going to compare these to ones when vsync is turned off

Clearly I was having issues with vsync as it was taking FPS down to 20-30 when it was on.

What other software can I use to limit FPS in BF4? Don't really want 100% GPU utilization if I'm getting no benefit over 60FPS

Check in msi afterburner that both gpus are are running the same clocks, i had a similar problem and found that afterburner was underclocking my gpu 2, took me ages to figure that out. Long shot but worth a try

Create a a User.cfg file and save it (as all files not txt) in the main BF4 folder.

Copy and paste and save this info in there.

GameTime.MaxVariableFps 60.000000
PerfOverlay.DrawFps 1
PerfOverlay.DrawGraph 1
PerfOverlay.Enable 1

Change the 1's to 0's if you want to disable in game fps and the performance graph monitor.

may be a stupid question but how do you 'create' a user.cfg file?

MSI Afterburner itself has frame rate limiter, you can just use that and that would limited the frame rate to ALL games.

There should be another icon app at astray which MSI Afterburner would have running (the icon should look a monitor with a number over it), open it and you should be able to set the frame rate limit.
