I was bored at work yesterday so picked up MBUK just to see if there's anything worth while in there.

The pull-out route-maps and free lock are quite handy at the very least. Figure I can use the lock to secure my saddle. It's only a cheap little one, but can happily chuck it in my Camelbak for emergencies.

Don't get too excited with the free MBUK gifts. I have a subscription to MBUK and the monthly free gifts are absolute pap! I wouldn't trust that lock to keep the Mrs locked up :D

The mag has got better since they redesigned it and included the free trail maps though!

I agree. It wouldn't be for anything more than a helmet or saddle though, so not too worried. Probably on par with something you'd pick up from the £1 shop anyway.
 
Those cheap locks can be handy. I have one that I use when I'm playing football, the bike is always in sight but it stops some **** picking my bike up and riding off on it while I'm in the middle of a game.
 
Bah, so much for a zero budget build for this IOW event. Even the single speed option is going on this frame is going to set me back over £100. I think the borrowing the bike option is best :D

What would be minimum steerer length for a head tube of 153mm?

I personally try to cut my steerers no less than 210mm, this allows them to be fitted to most bikes and headset combinations.

Do you know your headset stack sizes?

The reason I ask is because there is a fork for sale on ebay which is perfect but it's cut down to 185mm which i'm thinking is about 1cm too short :(

Aye think you will struggle even with a zero stack headset to get them on, and don't forget you have to add the stem on to that also which will be around 40-50mm
 
Can anyone give me some tips for going uphill on rough rocky terrain I just cant seem to do it :/ end up having to just walk the bike up instead.

Gear choice is important, low enough that you can spin easily and smoothly but not too low so you can't put in quick bursts of power if needed. Depending on your style and your bike, you're usually better sitting and spinning the pedals than standing and mashing them, gradient dependant. Weight shifting is key too, you'll be surprised at what you can get up if you get your positioning on the bike right at the right times.

Mostly its momentum, and as SDK says, thats a lot to do with fitness, the faster you can go up the climb the easier it is. Keep practicing, and try to ride as much as you can rather than walking. Even if it takes you longer, and you keep stopping and starting, the more you do the better you'll be. Rather than getting off and walking the rest when you stall, look for somewhere a bit smoother to get going again and get back riding.

I'm not the best rider at climbing, but I'm getting better by doing this, and once you start getting better, you'll start to enjoy them. I actually quite look forward to a challenging rocky climb, as long as its not too steep they're good fun.

Conventional headset stack height c20mm
stem height c40mm
steerer spacing in situ -3mm
Minimum steerer tube length = 216mm
