There is a need. With long travel bikes an air shock can overheat on long descents. With certain types of suspension air shocks will blow through the travel very easily. Coils are better on drop offs and square edge hits and just about everything else. For general xc/trail riding air shocks are fine, but not when things get narly like on a DH course...which AM bikes are meant to be able to ride; hence 'All Mountain'. I'll quite happily sacrifice a bit of weight for an all round better shock. :)

Be interesting to see how cane creeks db air shock performs. It's got a lot to live upto.

Question though, if a coil bottoms out it just compresses the spring totally, so minimal damage if any right?

If an air shock bottoms out, doesnt it blow out, damage possible?

Agreed, I also prefer coil.... but the weight sacrifice for AM bike for me is too great.
As for over heating - not many Alpine descents around for that to happen and I can't recall any DH descents in the UK being longer than FT Bill?

For me, I just love the extra adjustability to get the shock exactly how you want it which coil provides, admitedly there aren't many air shocks around that give you low/high compression and rebound but it's nice being able to tune it then forget about it.

Plus nothing that i've tried so far compares to the suppleness of a coil shock, the rp23 and monarch plus on my bike were great but the performance of the ccdb is worth the weight penalty. If the frame was any heavier then I might start to think twice.

That being said, if I can get my Tracer @ 30lbs WITH a coil shock and adjustable seatpost on ... well then that's an easy decision to make ;)

Haha, if it were only that easy Mossy :)

Well, my BOS Deville is nearing it's purchase very soon ( i Hope anyway), that should net me around 200 gram (ish)

Formula R1 brakes next, that should be 120 gram (ish) for the two brakes alone, excluding the rotors. Because these are so strong, I'd most likely change the large front rotor to 180, shaving another wee bit. My seat I can drop 50 grams relatively easily after that.

That should be the bulk of the weight of a coil shock gain negated if I stick a BOS Stoy + TI spring on there.

Unsure if I'll do all that, but if I had a load of wonga to drop right now, this will be it.

I try not to worry about weight, if you get it pushed let me know what its like, i find i do blow through the travel and it couldnt hurt to be more responsive to small bumps.

So, some good news.
Due to the competition in germany (YT/Canyon) and their agressive pricing strategies - Sportsnut Germany (Morewood distributors) have decided to shave the Morewood prices, including in the UK.

I'll have the new price list very soon, including that of the split pivot bikes - the Sukuma (170mm Trail/AM/Enduro/Scottish XC bike) and the Jabula (150mm/AM/Enduro/Scottish roadbike)

New DH orientated bikes (Makulu, Izimu/Zama/Kalula) out in a month or two (just new colours) and the Scottish XC and Scottish roadbike due out at the end of the year.

This might indeed put a halt to my spending on the Tracer. If they offer the above mentioned bikes with BOS equipment on it (already do with Formula bits), then I might just go for a full build Sukuma :p

Wow, I'm not sure if the power of the internet and cheap chinese labour driving down the prices of high quality bikes is a good thing however...I do fancy a bike for doing my shopping on.
