Big Bike Thread

Hi guys looking at getting some lights to start riding in an evening after work. Any recommendations? No budget really as long as I'm getting value for money.

Vague post is vague. Where and what will you be riding? VFM is subjective.

Apologies my post is vague indeed.

I'm wanting to ride in Derbyshire at night. So brightness and a few hours battery life is essential.
I often ride around The ladybower and Hope area.

Isn't that a bit pricey? Seems a lot for a simple CREE torch...

Not really. Torches vary a lot, from £1 to hundreds. Xtar are a pretty decent make and much better than the likes of Ultrafire etc. I haven't personally used one but have seen them recommended by people who know their stuff. You could probably get one cheaper if you looked at sites in China though.

I use a Fenix TK12 which cost me £46. It's built like a tank and I know it will never let me down so was worth the investment. Its also great using a torch as a bike light as I can simply unstrap it from the holder when my bike is in the shed and then use the torch to make my way back to the house.

Last year i bought a 1200 lumen light from dealtime extreme for about £28, best value for money you can get. I used it for my commute over the winter, riding down unlit roads, but a couple paired up would be more than enough for off road riding, if thats what your planning.

Something like this:

Get a couple of these and use one on your head. There isn't anything that compares for the price and even with the slightly shonky build quality you'd be pretty unlucky for two to fail on one ride. Saying that my original p7 one that's 4 years old still works fine.

Can't seem to figure out what sie BB it comes with either.

I know all my recommendations thus far have gone over your budget, but they weigh a tonne. According to one reviwer they are jus shy of 3kgs.

If you can't buy the SLX new, maybe look for second hand ones - the one I linked earlier in this thread is ideal, you can just take one of the rings off it.

If the SLX crank is too expensive, why not go down to the Deore Crank?

£50 + postage and comes with a Hollowtech BB.

I've had the double version for about 2.5 years now and brought a triple for my commuter build at the beginning of the year. Both running single ring now with chain devices. I'm 14.5 stone and these are solid under my weight. Don't really see the point in spending more unless you're going for a really light build.

I was just looking at other options as i am £272 over my ideal budget for this build.

I have that exact crankset on my Trek Fuel EX XC bike atm so it is an option.

Any opinions on a chain guide for use with a XT 2x10 front mech ? they seem to be £100 + i could potentially not bother with one.
