Anyone tell me from experience how much length is needed on a steerer?

The frame im looking at has a 115mm head tube and the forks ive seen second hand have 160mm steerer tube.

reckon the leftover 45mm will be enough for headset and stem?

If you use an integrated head set it should be fine. 160 -115 = 45mm stem stack height max.

New brakes should arrive tomoz from rose. Just got to then try and swap the levers without needing a bleed :S never tried it before.

If there shimano brakes its easy, remove the plastic block from between the pads then press the lever to make the pads touch. Remove the hose from the lever via the bolt then cut the hose to the desired length. Put nut back on the hose then the olive and insert the little musroom thing into the opening of the hose by tapping with a hammer while the hose is gripped with the hose clamp and a vice preferabley.connect back to lever and push the pads back in with a tyre lever of diner knife. Put the paf. Block back between the pads the squeeze the lever about 10 times. Done!

I think the steerer might be too short. Even a fully integrated headset takes up a few mm on the top + bottom.
For example, this fsa "zero stack" integrated headset actually has a stack height of 14mm. That would leave 31mm of steerer tub to fit the stem on.

edit: cane creek 'zero stack' has a slightly smaller stack height of 12.8mm, i dont think you'll get much lower than that though.

Shuuuut Uuuuup. Dont say that:D Actually I'm on a sram cassette but XT Derailleur

I've gone for

SLX Shifter
XT Cassette CS-M771 11-36
XT rear derailleur RD-M786
KMC X10 chain

3X10 but to be honest I very very very rarely use the big ring. I think only at Gisburn after hully gully to get enough speed up on the fireroad to make the next hill easier

My delivery has arrived.

I foolishly ordered a small caged derailleur and they couldnt change my order so had to order a large one which has also turned up. So if anyone is after a small Rd-M786 at cost (Won't even charge postage) let me know. Or I'll send it back.

A 10 speed Shimano derailleur will work with a 9 speed SRAM shifter.

So all i did was swap out my 9 speed Sram X9 derailleur for an SLX Shadow+ one. So now i have a 9 speed set-up with a clutched derailleur.

So does this work with no modification to the shifter or chain, are you still running a 9 speed chain?

Does it have clutch? If the above regarding shim 10spd Mechs and 9spd sram shifters works I maybe interested in it.

Yep still a 9 speed chain. Only the derailleur has changed. Only thing i added was a 6mm spacer where the cable clamps to it to alter the pull ratio slightly to get a better shift.
I just used a square nut with a small groove cut into it, and placed it between where the cable and the cable clamp.

I will get some pictures later to show what i mean.

Pictures would be great!

Found one of someone elses, little flashier than mine but does the same thing.

You may need a longer bolt as well, but its the same as a brake caliper bolt. Im sure like me you will have a few to hand.

Also interested in how well it shifts, if I can get that working without changing anything else it would be awesome seen as I've just bought a new cassette and chain!

I can then in slow time change everything else.

Without the spacer, it will work but is a bit clunky and takes ages to shift into the larger gears.

With the spacer its perfect, snaps quickly into each gear.

Ive just bought a clutched XT mech to do the same with my 9 speed until i fully switch over...There was a thread on STW about it.

I plan on just using a bunch of washers to space it out which i hope will work :p

The cable really needs a groove to sit in, otherwise vibrations soon cause it to come undone. Maybe you could wrap the cable round instead of just poking it through.
