Thinking of putting some Superstar Floating rotors 160mm on the Shan.
Anyone experience with with them?

Are they worth the extra over plain rotors?

Do Shimano pads become less effective over time, or are the supplied ones just a bit rubbish?

I bought some Shimano Deore disk brakes a couple of years ago and when I took the bike out for a ride last night the back brakes have no bite at all. If I pull the lever as hard as I can it just screeches loudly. The fronts did the same last year, so i replaced with cheap superstar pads and they are still working fine.

Going to replace them with some superstar sintered, but just wondered if anyone had the same issue with the stock Shimano pads and knew why they stopped working.

I'd suggest after a couple of years some new pads are in order regardless....?

Rode some Bike Park Wales again today... Im in desperate need of a new right hand shifter, rear wheel bearings, fork and rear shock service and some weight loss on my half... :(

The back brake was bought last summer and the front the summer before that. The pads lasted about a month or so before they started to squeak and not grip. I thought it could be contamination so replaced the rotors with Shimano ones and also heated the pads in the oven to burn off any oil. that didn't make any difference.

I don't ride an awful lot, so don't know why i'd need to buy new ones if they aren't worn?

Heating the pads in the oven will not help really if the pads are contaminated. Cleaning the pads and discs with isopropyl should decontaminate them as long as it's not too bad. I've had the same original Shimano pads in my Deores on my Canyon for well over a year and they are still as good as new to be fair. They've been in tons of mud, slop, rain, snow, grit and chunderbob yet the powers still there and there's no noise either.

How are your pads getting contaminated?

I have never managed to properly clean up a contaminated pad. Rotors clean ok with iso alcohol as you say, but i find pads are never the same again.

Mark, are you using an aerosol lube or cleaning product on your bike? or anything similar which could be getting on your brakes?

A few years ago while racing I had my bike cleaned by a mechanic, I didn't need my brakes for a long while after I started riding again, only to discover they barely worked until I burnt off whatever he had cleaned them with

Finally tracked down my AWOL Ribble order, now just need my bike-discount one to turn up.

I can't think of anything I could have done to contaminate them. The only thing I came across when I googled the issue was that some Shimano brakes can leak oil at the piston, but I doubt it would happen to both brakes. Plus the superstar pads I bought last summer are still working great.

I use GT85, but I dont spray it near the bike, I spray onto a cloth and then use it to clean the chain off. Only other aerosol I have used was some muc-off disc brake cleaner, which actually made it even worse :p. That was a waste of £5 lol.

Just wanted to give a big thumbs up to superstar customer services.

Got myself a headset and found it didn't fit, returned with some marks on one of the pieces but gave a full refund with no questions asked.

I really need to get back on my bike. Not touched it since the gears went **** up on the red route at Sherwood.

Been fixed but i haven't tested it yet.

On a serious note. Some of the DH videos posted where the riders are going mental through the tree's, jumps and turns, is this what you lot do? you must have massive balls! I salute you!

Friend of mine made out he did the same stuff, went out with him and i end up leaving him behind (Well till my gears decided break).

clean pikes dirty bike really should clean it :P

new shock is awesome - bumps the travel up to 140mm and the kashima does actually make a lot of difference to the initial movement

had a go at tidworth - really good fun, just rode general berminator all afternoon but cleared all the jumps on it

such a versatile bike now - saddle up and ride all day / saddle down and its burly enough to jump and mess about on

just need new brakes now - maybe the zee ones
