Dalby forest is around a 2hr 30min car journey for me, is it worth it?

forest of dean is around 2 hours so thats abit better but still quite a trek. My boss went forest of dean on an uplift weekend organised by a friend and was absolutley terrorfied from the get go till he left. My boss wont even attempt the black at cannock and said the downhill runs were at least 10 times harder at dean! He has only rode a bike around 10 times though and went on a 130mm xc cube :-/

Depends what you are looking for really, both have there own merits.

The uplift at FOD is fun and the tracks are not particularly technical or long and so in a day you can do a fair few runs for your money plus there are 7 tracks so you can mix it up a bit. There is also a red route but it is not very long about 5km I think from memory.

Dalby is very much more XC orientated with the 20+km red route with off shoots of black, including the bike park in the middle of the forest there is enough to keep you occupied for a good couple of hours.

anyone cut shimano hoses down without having to re-bleed them?

going to follow the epic bleed solutions guide tonight

anything else to look out for (i need these to work for this weekend!)

I had to do it to my front and back brakes when I 1st got them as the cables were super long.

I pumped out the pads so there were touching each other, undo the hose screw/union, cut the hose (lever end of course) put a new olive on the hose then put the little brass mushroom thing in the hose then connect to lever, push pads back in with a flat blade like a dinner knife and viola done.

Make sure you have the screw, olive and musroom on the hose ready to do up in the right order!

I didn't have/use a vice but it would have been 10 times easier if I did as putting the mushroom back in the hose is difficult to do solo as your having to hold the hose with the yellow clamps in pliers while forcing the mushroom in the hose.

So FOD for more gnar? I might hit Dalby 1 day but XC is not really my thing. Me boss said the uplift at forest of dean was faultless, the trailers were mint with no way of bike damage and the drivers were cool with decent music blaring to get you in the mood.

Guys, Im about to order my stuff for my 1x10 switch, can someone check over my parts to see if they make sense? I think I need to get about £40 worth of tools to be able to rip out old stuff and install new stuff but thats fine.

Shimano XT M771 10 Speed MTB Cassette 11-36T £37 (£35)
Shimano XT M780 10 Speed Trigger Shifter I SPEC B RIGHT £36
Race Face Narrow Wide Single Chainring 32T 104mm RED £40

My mine concern is the bottom bracket, is it going to be ok switching it? Or is that a no-no?

Do you really need a chain device with the narrow/wide chainring?

Also, where are you getting the crank from? They often come with BB included.

Someone wiser may know more ... but I think it's easier to get a proper single ring crankset or even a triple that you can take down to a single.

Isn't the chainline not quite accurate if you convert a double to a single? Where as on a triple you're in effect using the middle chainring position? You could get the Zee crankset instead?

wanted to be safe, I read around and there were reports of some slippage and Id rather not take the fall if I can prevent it, especially if im on clip-ins.

crank from here: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-xt-m785-10-speed-double-chainset/rp-prod67200
doesnt come with BB afaik.

Im using a Race Face Narrow Wide Single Chainring the XT crankset will be ripped apart and put on it.

hmmm, a lot of confusing info on that link.
In the questions section, some people say it does come with BB and some people say it doesnt
The staff answer is "Shimano MTB cranks are supplied with the more commonly used threaded Hollowtech bottom bracket." so i'd hope that would be correct.

CRC are free postage, so i'd order the crank and see then if it doesnt have the BB you can order that as well.
edit: actually, CRC have free return postage as well, so you could order it then send it back if you end up with 2

They'll both fit your bike, so no problems there.
The issue is that they both need different tools to remove/fit.

You need this sort of thing to remove the old one then this to install the new one.

Do you have I-Spec B compatible Shimano brakes, otherwise that shifter won't work?
Might be worth going with the short cage Zee over the medium cage XT.
As mentioned, chainline from a triple will be better than a single ring double, again just going for the Zee single ring might be better.

yes i do. I have the new XT brakes.
I dont understand your last comment? Im not using the rings at all, im just removing the crank and putting it on a raceface. or is it something to do with sizes of the crank being different on the double/triple.

can you explain?

honest - don't bother with the chainguide if going with narrow wide chainring. Not dropped a chain yet in about 9 months of riding with it. It's more faff that it's worth.

Can you not just keep your existing bottom bracket/cranks etc - fit the single chain ring on that? Why do you need a whole new set of cranks etc?

Also go short cage zee over the medium.
