I worked out what I needed to comfortably climb any hill I'd want to without having to bugger about with the cassette. It gives a similar gear to a 32 with a 42 range extender but isn't a bodge and keeps useful midrange. As my mountain biking tends to involve very little road work it seemed a sensible compromise to loose a bit of top end speed.

 really don't know how you manage to get any speed going down on 28T. I'm spinning on a 32T both on the flat and going down. Won't be long before you need more than 28T!

Edit:30kph is only 18mph, it's nothing. You saying you never get to or exceed that? I take it you have a cadence sensor paired to a farming or something that you use to measure all this?

I can easily spin it out going down and if I wanted to on the flat. It's just for the type of riding I use my mountain bike for that's not much of an issue. Using a 32T ring would only give my 10% extra and I'd notice the loss a lot more when climbing. I can't honestly say I pedal that much when going down hill either and from Strava I'm not slow.

Why because he uses a different ratio. Not sure why some people have a problem with what others choose to use. I really like the low ratio fir the days when there is loads of climbing it was a god send for Snowdon and it gets used a lot at lee quarry when I'm knackered.

32t on 1x10 with a 11t-36t cassette. Sometimes i wish i had a 30t on some never ending climbs but my bike weighs at least twice as much as everyone elses and my enormous biceps are rather heavy too :-(

Ive gone for a 34 front and 11t-36t on rear and im glad I didn't go any lower on the front! Im finding im in 8th/9th for half the DH runs I do!

Chaps,

Been to Llandegla today and it's become increasingly apparent that I need some better pedals and shoes.

Can anyone reccomend a good combo?

I'm going to assume you ride flats as you never specified.
Teva Link/5.10 freerider + flat pedal of choice.
personally i've found that as long as you have a decent shoe most high quality pedal will hang on in there, just pick a pedal with a nice thin open design and replacable pins and you wont go wrong.

I can tell you my preference but that may not work for you, my choice was Teva Links with E13 LG1+ pedals, havnt dropped a pedal yet, big platform with loads of room and grip for those OH **** moments, plus the pedal has replacable skid plates as well as pins, a bit pricey though.

Five ten free rides here too. On Dmr v8.

This is what I was looking at!

Currently have crap Halfords pedals and years old Lonsdale flats, every jump I was landing today almost ended in an off, not confidence inspiring at all! Needs addressing ASAP.
