Assuming they are around long enough To cover it.

When you say you know the guys, have you tried one of their bikes ? I'd be very interested to know what people think, as they are so new there is little first hand experience that I can find.

Just back from a biking trip to Peaslake. Early train to Dorking, ride offroad all the way up Leith Hill, get caked in mud. Wait for a friend to meet up with us for 1 hr. First run down summer lightning and late friend face plants and splits his cheek right open. Taxi to A&E and now a bike to clean.

Biking can be a cruel mistress

went for a ride yesterday up grizedale, chain snapped twice! Give up 2nd time and rolled back to the bike shop and got a new one. I had got a new cassette and had a new shimano chain that i had for ages so can't take it back :(

Once i got going i enjoyed myself, went up there with someone who had just got a cube hardtail, very nice looking bike. his first bit of offroading. took around 2 hour 45 for a route i normally do in 1 hour 20 but least it gave me nice amount of stops waiting for him as it was roasting yesterday!

Highlight of the day was seing a few kids with their dad beasting the trail! when they stopped at the end of the section he said his 9 year old is northwest downhill champion at under 10's, they were doing a few loops of the trail before heading of somewhere else. Don't know how kids get so good so quick.

Do love getting out riding, makes you love your bike more even with the mechanicals. if i were to upgrade it would only be to another santa cru heckler lol

Price just seems to add up, bike parts are not as cheap as I first thought. It's hard too, as I can be right tight :p

Pikes £500
Wheels £350

i got a set of hope pro 2 wheels on dt swiss rims for about £100 inc delivery 2nd hand not long back. didnt need front as have hope pro2evo on mavic 721 rim but still a bargain to be had. just needed to service the wheel.
For suspension could always look at rockshox sector, i have a set and they're ace. no issues in the couple of years i have had them. cheaper version of revs.

I still haven't decided on wheels as im unsure of superstar hubs and rims being heavy and not really long term.. What other options do I have guys?

which superstar hubs?

the switch evos arent bad, coupled with flows running tubless HD's even my clunky trek fuel is sub 30lb.

I just get the feeling that the superstar supplied hubs are going to end up like my commencal hubs... Junk :| Im tempted just to say balls to it and go for Hope Hoops..

touch wood ive had mine (switch evo on stans as mentioned) for 18 months and theyve been faultless with zero maintenance (other than hosing the mud off).

I thought the SS hubs are mean't to be decent?
If they have removable bearings, what else could go wrong? Apart from catastrophically failing :D

DHX wheelset will only set you back £130.
Or EX721 Rims on Switch Hubs for £220

Price it up and its £280... I can get hopes for £315.

arent they rebranded other makes? i thought i read that recently.

they are cartridge bearing so i assume easy enough to replace?

It's the freehubs that people seem to have plenty of problems with on the superstar hubs. I'd sooner have a second hand Hope wheelset than a new Superstar one.

quick google later:

Evo hub bearing replacement is easy you just need a drift and a hammer. This is the email I was sent

"Hello the tube between the bearings is supported by two rubber o-rings, these self centre the tube to make fitting the wheels easier. If you place your drifting tool inside the hub and push the tube back around 2mm so you can get a grip on the edge of the bearing, you can knock the bearing and the 2 endcaps out in one go. It works best if you go around the bearings slowly tapping it out ."

A list of the bearings needed
Switch EVO F
6804 x2
Switch EVO R
6902 x2
6902 x2

If you want I can PM you the superstar service sheet for the EVO hubs let me know. I got my bearings as a kit off ebay a guy in Edinburgh called Katec good service

again, no bother after 18 months. no slippage etc.

Replacing bearings doesn't bother me (However my commencal ones have worn the hub). Its slipping freehubs which do, as much fun as it is cranking towards a jump and having slipped drivetrain, I feel like giving it a miss this year :D

Knifey - I'll be selling my Mavic 721 + Hope wheels if you can wait? Too skint atm to get something lighter for the Shan and don't have spares to put on her.

I need something sooner as my bike is off the road. I priced up brakes and wheels and its 480. Coupled with the fact i need headset and forks servicing im thinking of selling the bike and buying a mega comp
