I think white would be too much... Want to get a splash of colour in it which is why I was thinking Gunmetal.... Wish there was an easier way to compare :(

Get some orange nano techs and I will swap you a green one :D

So you want me to have a white/black bike with 1 orange and 1 green pedal? At least it would stand out if it was ever nicked!! :D

By the by, I am still not sure whether to go Nano's (standard) or the Thru Pin ones....

Edit: New sig :D

LOL :D

Back in the real World :p.... Thru pins or normal ?

Will be ordering on Thurs when I get paid. I think it will be Gunmetal as the White will be a bit too much, Black is boring (and the standard ones are black to begin with) and no other colour will really go...

Yeah fair point; a 6 inch AM bike is probably OTT.

I was just thinking that every XC race I've entered has had a far more challenging course.

The problem is the trail grading doesn't always reflect the type of trail to expect.

EG: Glentress black is graded as such because it's long. Go to Kirroughtree black and it's not as long but much more technical. XC or AM bike?

Then there are local authorities who grade trails based on what they have to offer. Ride Thetford black, go to Wales and ride Whites level or the Wall, then Thetford black will look like a blue trail in comparison.

LOLz :) :)

Exactly :)

I rode a red run in Switzerland that had a 25 foot road gap on it :D
(and it wasn't even the hardest part of the course)

Sometimes I think grading is purely done because trail builders have to and they take a guess at it

Need some pointers people, finally got a bike rack for the car so me and a friend are gonna head to chopwell woods as its supposed to be a bit tamer for us green horns! This will be the first time on single track, any track for that matter.

I'm hoping my bike will hold up, its a 2009 giant bolder very tame bike but its just a ride while I save for something more substantial but I'm just wondering if its a bad idea alltogether? Also need a supplys list, up to now I have the following.

Hydration pack
Spare inner tube
Multi tool
Spare chain links
Chain splitter
Puncture kit

Is there anything else thats a must that I'm missing?

Chopwell has the ability to be fairly tame if you want it to be. I have plenty of friends with similar/worse specced bikes who ride it regularly.

The only thing that may be missing (that springs to mind) is some food. I'm always starving after a decent ride.
Edit: Oh, and a pump. No use having spare tubes with no pump. Lube if you haven't lubed the chain recently.

Did Coed Llandegla (Red) on Saturday. Was really impressed with the centre and the trail was really good. Girlfriend was with me and I was impressed at how well she did although she bottled some of th berms :p

Aiming to go back a week on Saturday with my mates.

Was planning on heading there soon and the missus wanted to go with me too but shes only got a hybrid/trekking bike with no suspension, would it only be the green run thats suitable for her? Don't mind taking her round there if so.. At least it'll get her started!

cool, have a pump, obviously a helmet as well, it is just a bell avanti, general bike helmet but protection none the less. what sort of helmet would be advised if i do a lot more single track type stuff, full face overkill? been looking at the skateboard lid style ones, relatively cheap but look solid.

will definitely take some food, looking foreword to it, should be a great day for a first time out on a track.

also as your form the north east do you know of many other tracks around?

Your bike will be fine for Chopwell, the marked routes are quite tame except a sketchy section in the top half of the powerline trail, winter took it's toll on that but it's easily passable by riding around it. Some of the better trails are well hidden, I actually live in Chopwell (takes less than 5mins to get to the car park) so if you want a guided tour then drop me an email (details in trust) and I'd be happy to show you the more fun bits :)

Edit: Just noticed your reply re: north east trails. Hamsterly Forest is always a good laugh, their black route, section 13 and skills park are well worth a visit.

Wow thats a great offer man, certainly would make all the difference having someone with knowledge of the area to guide you.

I think most trail grades are decided on before the trail itself. They'll decide who they want to attract, and pick a grade they thinks suitable. Whether the finished trail matches the grade isn't thought about.

I like Llandega though, I like that its fast and smooth. But then rocky stuff is what my rides usually consist of, nice to do something different. And the facilities are fantastic.

The only other real place I hit regularly is Hamsterley - black, section 13, transmission and accelerator.

Holywell Dene is my local haunt and is okay for singletrack but it's definitely not worth traveling for.

Thrunton is a good laugh, as are some of the routes round Simonside forest.

In fairness I spend more time on my roadie than my MTB so I'm not the best person to make recommendations.

ill have a look into them most of what you listed is around a 20 minute drive away so not bad, once i have a bit of track under my belt and am confident enough and have a better ride ill head to hamsterley for a day out.

Do you know how to change a tube?
Patch a tube?
Use your chain breaker?
Install a powerlink to repair the broken chain?

I'm always amazed by the people I've helped that either aren't carrying what they should be or don't have a clue how to perform the basic repair tasks.

Yep I've used bikes for years, had practice replacing a link not so long ago Wich went pretty smoothly, everything else is basic bread and butter, only thing illl be lacking today is mad skills lol.
What software do you guys use to track runs, looking foe something I can load gpx files into, I have my tracks buying struggling to import routes. Android by the by
