I use a Garmin 705, lets me preplan routes at home on the computer, check aerial photography of the surroundings etc.

That descent was steeeeep! I was just glad I wasn't climbing it.

Yeah, too much road, but I was hunting out the climbs and trying to get as far away from the urban areas as I could. Tough to truly escape into the wilderness living where I do when you're only a couple of hours away from home ;)

Ah I've had enough of this.

I need to know / meet more people locally who go out riding.

Is there anyone in the Quantocks area of Somerset who fancies riding?

I NEED to ride my new bike, I've been out once :(

Get on BikeRadar and post a thread, there's quite often similar threads looking for local riding peeps.

May I ask why you don't go out on your own? I like riding with others but on your own you can spend as long as you like out there :)

Hmm, I've thought about it. Where I'd like to ride is a bit in the middle of nowhere, and having not ridden in a while I can just see myself crashing and being stuck without phone signal in the forest!

I'm looking at BikeRadar, I think I'll get registered.

I'm thinking of taking cycling up, I want to be more active instead of just sitting around the house / on my computer and I used to do a lot of cycling (When I was younger) and enjoyed it and wanted to get back into it,

I was going to purchase a new laptop but I thought instead of getting something where I'm going to be sat down using I could actually get something that would help me keep fit,

If I do cycling would it help me to lose weight? I'm not fat I've just got a little bit of a belly and want to get rid of it.

I want to change my diet, I don't eat loads of fat foods but I have the odd packet of crisps here and there and in all honesty I don't really eat any fruit and vegetables although I do drink water all the time and orange juice.

I'm just thinking if I started taking cycling up and started eating healthy would I start to lose weight?

I'm around 5'7 and about 11stone (I'm 17) and would ideally start to build some abs etc although I know you can't do this just by cycling but that's where I would like to start.

Sorry for the long message but any help would be appreciated :)

cycling is not the most efficient way to lose weight but you can lose weight cycling if you have the motivation to ride hard and longer distances, set targets like 10 miles in 1hour and just try to improve each time.
what sort of cycling do you want to do ? there's road, cross country and downhill, i'd say cross country is what your looking for. also how much do you have to spend on a bike? i imagine being 17 the answer is going to be not a lot.

It would help I suppose :) I would also be doing other things on the side as well which should also help.

As there isn't much cross country around where I live it would have to be road even though I would probably be on the path :p

I have around £150

If he was going to be buying a laptop then thats sufficient to get a reasonable entry-level bike (£340).

A few people don't rate bikes at this level but I really don't see the need to spend more as a beginner especially if you are not sure if you will be using a more expensive one to its full potential.

The bike above will see you right for a while. I certainly have no problems with mine and that includes using it off-road

Edit: The £150 budget wasn't there at the time LOL

If you can scrape a bit more then these are meant to be ok - http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/rockrider-5-2-grey-69566845/

That looks a very nice bike, The strange thing is I was aloud to spend up to £400 on a laptop but I can't on a bike :s But seeing that bike I really want it :p

Edit: Just noticed there's no disc brakes on the bike

I doubt you'll need them really. And for a half decent set of disc brakes you'll probably spend £100-£150, which is most of your budget.

Thinking of downsizing from my trek session to more of an allrounder. Most of my riding will still be dh but considering i never do uplift days its getting a little tiresome, its like taking my bike for a walk.

What do people recommend for an all over good bike at around 2-2. 5k? I rather like the alpine 160,, how would I get on with this if I decided I just wanted to do a spot of trail riding? I know it'll be competent on the dh but would like a change every so often :)

The Alpine 160 would be a good all rounder, it is not to big for trail riding but I think you could find it to small for big DH especially coming from the 200mm Trek Session.

I've been looking at bikes with ~160mm travel too and I'm pretty much settled on getting an Enduro Comp, they RRP at £2249 but I reckon if you pay cash you will get a few quid knocked off. Other bikes around that price with 160mm of travel are the Commencal Meta 6 (~£2.4k, I tried a Meta 5.5 and the frame had quite a bit of flex) and my other bike of choice (if I could give one a try out that is!) a Canyon Strive ES 8.0 which come in at £2239.

Plenty of choice out there though :)

Well I've seen many people running 180 up front on the alpine, although if I'm going to be proper battering it over drops and rocks of dh runs i don't know how well it would hold up with the extra 20mm.

Exact same bike as the last one but with discs. If you can afford it then I would recommend that one. The discs might not be great but at least you will have disc compatible hubs should you wish to upgrade.

As some people will say, the components ain't the best but the frame is meant to be decent enough to make it worthwhile upgrading if you want.

I await recommendations from better people than me however I don't think you can get much better for your money

Trek Scratch? Bit burly for trail but you could get one of the Air models and obviously the suspension will be similar to what you're used to.

or maybe a Giant Reign X http://activesport.co.uk/shop/artic...10-Full-Suspension-Mountain-Bike.html?pse=coa
