I wouldn't get Deore brakes. They feel horrid. I would also get XT hubs over the Superstar hubs any day of the week. And I have otherwise branded Superstar hubs on the DH bike.

You have a negative bias to superstar because of one pedal :p There EVO hub is very good and has convert-able axles too for future upgradability and the cartridge bearings are easily replaced. Id agree the Deores are not brilliant but neither are the Juciy 3/5's.

I would get Juicy 3's above Deore and that's saying something. I never said there was anything wrong with Superstar hubs, like I said, I have them under another name on my DH bike. I just think they are very over rated.

I cant think of many hubs other than superstar and hope that allow you to run in all the different combos, never mind for that price. If there good enough for a DH team they cant be bad at all.

It was actually Avid ELiXIR 5 as opposed to the Juicys I was looking at - http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/BCAVEXIL5/avid-elixir-5-disc-brake

I can get them at roughly the same price as the Shimano ones by the time you include discs... Does that change anything at all?

Also - I know I mentioned money is tight but are the Gold RL Recons worth the extra 70 quid over the Silver TK's?

I think they are just rebranded Juicys really same feel and performance, the Gold RL recons will be lighter and have a better damping control system *Motion Control*.

2011 Schwalbe Racing Ralph Tubeless Ready 2.1:

racing_ralph.jpg

It's basically a Race King Supersonic but with side knobs for gripping in the corners. Claimed weight is 465g. My not so precise scales say 500g. About 40g more than the 2.0 RK SS. The RR was also much easier to mount on the rim thanks to the tubeless ready bead hook. First ride...soon :D

Ive now got the 2.25's. 2.1's are super sketchy! good luck. ;)

edit - rather than taking the **** while on the internetz, Here's a question:

Where can I get a X0 carbon cage for my rear mech. Mine is broken and the chain keeps on rolling over the jockeywheel.

My tyre experience over the past 3 years:

2.5" Nevegal Single ply: Grippy but push them hard and they can wash out with no notice. Single ply might not be the most robust for DH

2.35" Nevegal Stick-E: Grippy but slow rolling, mud clearance isn't great

2.4" Continental Mountain King supersonic: Extremely grippy and very light, but also has a very thing side wall. Fast rolling.

2.2" Continental Mountain King supersonic, as above but more likely to get flats due to its small volume. Only good as a rear tyre. Like the 2.4" it measures up small. Don't run these if you ride on very rocky trails, or if you are a fatty.

2.2" & 2.4" Continental Mountain King UST - Not nearly as good as the Supersonic versions. 2.4" is...ok. 2.2" is poor. Avoid!

2.4" Continental Rubber Queen Black Chilli. AKA Trail King. Immensly grippy in all conditions, heavier than advertised. Real weight is 1000g. Slow rolling. Actually measures 2.4". Thick sidewalls for a single ply tyre. These are huuuge. Might not fit on some frames. I'll be taking these to the Alps this year.

2.0" Continental Race King 2.0" Supersonic. Extremely fast and light. low profile. Very sketchy on dry loose trails, like ski's in the mud/snow. Use wisely.

2.4" 2010 Nobby Nic UST. The best tyre I have used. Measure up as 2.4" too. A little heavy/slow, but not overly so.

2.2" 2011 Nobby Nic UST. Perfect match to the 2.4" for the rear.

...I have some 2.1" Racing Ralph's and the new Pacestar Nobby Nics to try out sometime soon too.

Hope this helps. :)

Im looking to get some Nobby nic 2.4 UST if i can find any or mountain kings 2.4's

Whats the benefits of running a 2.2 on the rear and 2.4 on the front?

Thanks

If i recall they cost nearly as much as a new mech from SRAM.

I also have the Tubeless ready 2.2 NN but the side wall is super thin and I'm scared to use it. :o

2.4 front for maximum grip. Good for really rocky trails like Laggan. You don't need as much grip at the rear as if it slides out you can control it. If the front slides out it can mean one tatty over the side!
