2.4 front for maximum grip. Good for really rocky trails like Laggan. You don't need as much grip at the rear as if it slides out you can control it. If the front slides out it can mean one tatty over the side!

Thanks for the link.....Ive always ran matched pairs on front and back.

Im currently running 2.3 WTB weirwolf's and they wash out bad so ill probably bang an order in for the Nobby nics.

Would you say they are a load better than the mountain kings with them being double the price?
 
Hmm been thinking, time for a new Stem + Bar combo me thinks, running a 70mm stem and some azonic 1.5" risers and im a little stretched out, thus leading to a bit of lower back ache/pain, so thinking of bringing the stem in to about 50mm with the same amount of rise on new bars or close to it, but in the 31.8 clamp instead of the smaller version ive got..Any specific ones i should look at or stay away from - going on my 456, which i love chucking about and general mucking about on.

It depends what version of the Mountain King you are looking at. As with all Conti tyres only the Black Chilli ones are worth looking at. The Pacestar compound is Schwalbe's equivalent.

The Mountain King 2 UST retails £42.95 where the Nobby Nic UST retails at an eye watering £54.99.

It is hard to swallow the price but, if you can get a good deal on NN's them then they are worth every penny over the MK's. More grip and more side wall protection. If a bit heavier and maybe slightly slower rolling.

It's basically a Race King Supersonic but with side knobs for gripping in the corners. Claimed weight is 465g. My not so precise scales say 500g. About 40g more than the 2.0 RK SS. The RR was also much easier to mount on the rim thanks to the tubeless ready bead hook. First ride...soon :D[/QUOTE]


I switched over my useless Specialized tyres for a Nobby Nic front and Racing Ralph rear in the week. Went out to Llandegla today and the difference is like night and day! Don't feel like I'm going to die every time I corner now! :D

Next on the list of upgrades is brakes I think, the Juicy 3s I have don't seem to be very good even after I've changed the pads and bled them. What do people recommend?

Touch wood mine have been ok so far but a lot of people have had problems with them. Purple head had a 'mare with his set. Then the piston on his other set fell out. :eek: Probably more to do with him being a numpty but still. :p

Hope brakes get my vote every time. Really easy to bleed and lovely CNC work. :cool:
 
The ones on the on-one site are last years models. Still very good though and a bargain for the money.

Snakeskin for side wall protection. Triple compound (Pacestar), best grip. Take your pick. :)
 
Unfortunaly The Ones look a bit out of my price range, the Hope V2s are a bit cheaper though so I'll do some reading up on them thanks! :)

Ive just bought one of the of the ORC compound nobby nics from on-one (Thanks Booyaka) as thats the only ones in the 2.4 i can find in stock to try on the front , i ideally wanted UST's

Have you tried this compound weescott?

Think ill go for the racing ralph triple on the rear.

I wouldnt have thought you needed V2s, have a look at M4s or X2s.

Kona* got some of the OCR compound and seems to like them, they performed pretty well when we were up at Glentress.

Only had a quick 1.5hr ride as my front wheel is SERIOUSLY in need of truing, however first impressions are excellent!! This thing is just ridiculously plush, I thought my Enduro with ti coil was plush, but on a really rocky fast descent at local trails (we're talking bricks, cobbles, stones all integrated/half sunk into the trail, it just floats over everything, the amount of speed I could carry was scary.

The forks feel extremely plush whilst still riding high in their travel, I've just set them to BOS recommended settings and added a little rebound, it's gonna be fun experimenting with settings.

1x10 rocks, the 36 x 30 combo gives a little more pedalability up the steep climbs around here (compared to the 1x9 rig on my hardtail) I reckon with some improved fitness it's going to be a winner. The drivetrain is absolutely silent, it really is quite a Covert little machine :D

On the tire subject, i dont think ill be having the none snakeskin version of the NN on my bike, our local trail is next to a railway with all that shingle stuff, and some of the storys of the sidewalls splitting are putting me off - The tire and stem and bar hunt continues for the moment lol.
