Brilliant ride this morning, tried somewhere new, good mix of fast singletrack some technical bits and fast xc. Hardest bit was crossing a river not easy keeping the front wheel going where you want it on slippy rocks.

What time did you get up at!

Woke at 4am, went out at 05:20 best time to ride, no people to worry about. Going again tomorrow morning, might take the gopro need to start getting some footage, want to put a bit of a video together at some point.

Can anyone recommend me some decent wide bars?

Currently using carbon monkeylite DH bars @ 710 wide ....I bought them used and dont know their past life so fancy changing them for piece of mind.

Wouldn't mind something a bit longer and 1/2 inch rise.

Any recommendations....nothing too expensive.

Thanks

Ok, so I've aquired a Trek FX 7.5 on the cycle2work scheme and in a bid to encourage me to cylce to work more (9 miles each way) I've been researching electric kits to do this bike justice.

This is what I've ordered:-

Tongxin 190rpm hub with disc mount.
Lyen mini monster controller.
Thumb throttle + cruise control from Lyen.
Torque arm and dropout washers from ebikesca.

I will be ordering one of the 36v15ah lipo shrink wrap batteries from BMS battery on pay day.

All in the above should weigh in at 5.5kg - nice and light weight and should give me 25miles range, easily enough for my commute without a charge at work.

First to arrive was the motor which I acquired via ebay. I then ordered some Halo DB black spokes and a Mavic A-319 rim to lace it into.

Spokes in place.

It's been years since I built a wheel (worked at a bike shop when I was 15yrs to 19yrs old).

3hrs later and I'm quite happy with that - proof of the pudding will be riding it though!

Cyclesheme voucher arrived Wednesday so finsihed work early and picked up this from the LBS:-

As you can see, I've already fitted the accessories :-)

Lyen controller, thumb throttle and cruise control also arrived a while ago:-

Nice small controller. Need to have a think about where to mount it - thinking about making a base plate that will mount to the seat tube with the bottle mounts then mounting the controller to that.

Fitted the handlebar controls:-

The cruise control fitted like a dream with no need to reposition the other controls. I had to be creative with the thumb throttle. You'll note that it twists backwards now - actually seems to work quite well - do twist throttle twist backwards? Needed to fit a lower profile clamping bolt to the brake leaver to ensure the sti down change leaver cleared it.

Trial fitted the built up motor/wheel. The Treks drop outs measured at 9.4mm and the hub shaft at 9.9mm so 1/2 an hour filing the hub shaft and it now fits a treat. Also had to elongate the torque arm mounting hole to be able to get a bolt into the eyelet.

That's it for now until I get a battery and can start wiring it all up - good news is BMS battery are now listing the shrink wrap lipos again so back to original plan of 36v15ah battery - just wish payday would hurry up!

None will be as comfy as the Carbon Monkeylite bars though.

I use the Answer Pro Taper DH bars, I have them in 1/2" rise on my hardtail and 1" rise on my full sus, 780mm width so plenty to mess around with until you find something that feels comfortable, I think they're reduced on CRC now at the moment (£40?).

Thanks for links

Id like to keep the monkeylites but just dont trust them....ive had an off myself with them and just dont know what abuse they've had.Ive been running them for a while now but its still in the back of my head they are going to fail.

I did notice these on CRC might go for them.

All my bars have been 1" rise thinking of trying the 1/2" inch rise this time though.

Are you running them at the full width or cut down?

I have a set of Monkeylite XC CNT bars sitting in the garage for this very reason. There isn't a mark on them and CNT bars are stronger than Alu bars, but I couldn't bring myself to sell them incase some poor sod broke his face if they failed.

I just took delivery of these this morning, was in two minds about them and the Answer bars, but went for the Nuke Proof when saw them on offer. They're very very nice, well happy with them.

shredded the swinners again today, love the fast downhill bermy bit (at the top of the insane steep climb bit
Is that the trail off to the left as you're sat at the top bit? There's the left trail with the berms, the middle one with some table-top jumps, then another to the right which I've not tried yet. All good fun though, except for the trek back to the top! :p

Out again this morning at 5am, absolutly caked in mud seems my shimano bottom bracket has started to complain about all the mud and water, they really dont last very long, think im going for a hope one next, see if i can revive it one last time.

I have had the shimano about 11 months but it started grinding after about 6 so took it apart and cleaned it out, packed with grease and its done another 5 months.
