Hi All,

Im new to these parts of the forum so please be gentle :) im looking into getting a mountain bike, but im a bit clueless on what to buy and not to buy ect.

I visited my local Halfords and the sales guy was pretty helpful, but i feel he was just pushing for a sale and telling me what i wanted to hear. I have a max budget of £700 and i was looking at this bike - http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...uctId_786809_langId_-1_categoryId_165499#tab0 .

Can anybody tell me if that’s a decent bike, overpriced ect? or recommend me a better bike for the money?

Il mainly be using the bike for some commuting and gravel rides along the local canal at 1st, then once im a bit fitter be looking to do some more mountain bikey off road stuff.

Thanks in advance.

This is a much better bike and located in the midlans. Also, the same size as the one you linked to.

Anyone got a Leatt DBX Ride 3 Neck brace? tempted to pick one up in the CRC sale but a bit concerned about the lack of adjustability.

Gents, anyone used SRAM/avid? brakes? Someones selling X0 front and rear ones for £110 inc rotors and adapters
Not been on a bike with them on, was going to hold out for some hope ones going cheap but doubt i'll get this cheap!

They are meant to be good brakes, not tried the X0 personally although I have used Juicys and Elixirs and they've been fine but nothing exceptional. That's £110 for both sets?

edit:

Looks pretty good to me

Well £120 but i'll see if they'll take £110 as im tight lol
It looks like for both sets, they'll be an upgrade on my tetro brakes i reckon!

actually dont need the rotors as they're too big so will see if he'll sell without. I only brought a hope floating rotor yesterday

So I decided to listen to Andelusion and not get a GT Distortion.. Nope, I'm not being sensible, instead I'm gonna spend more money on my Blue Pig! I need a new shifter for the front, so think I might try the x0 Grip Shifters.. I likes the look of them, and my fingers/thumbs tend to hurt after a long session with the triggers, so they have to be worth a shot. I used to enjoy Grip's on my old cheap bikes years ago, so surely some good ones I'd get on with?

Thinking of getting a Specialized Rockhopper 2012 for about £500.

As this will be my first proper mountain bike would it be worth spending the extra on the Comp (£600) or Expert (£700) models?

Edit: Actually, I'll rule out the Expert. An extra £200 is a bit much and the fork on the Standard and Comp models will probably be fine for me.

might be worth a look at. better branded forks, brakes and has xt / deore groupset.

i didnt think the cycle to work scheme was that good anymore, personally if it;s something you're going to use a lot i'd just get the better one.
Just don't start looking at the next models up as they're all really good value too, next thing you'll be looking at full suspension and into the 0000's

Not sure how good the scheme is going to be. My work should be reintroducing it in the next week or so so I'll do my sums when I have the details.

If I'm only going to save about £50 to £75 but end up with a worse bike then I'll likely just not bother with it and buy one out with the scheme.

Just having a look at whats for sale near me and seen this:

what a strange looking frame

There's an old guy at Hamsterley who rides one of these, he's up the x4 and DH track most weekends. Not seen him ride it only sat near the hunt.

Think he also partakes in a bit or off piste trail building too, at one point he had a mini digger hidden up there under a camo net.
