I need a helmet.

Any reason not to just spend £15 on this cheapo one from Sports Direct? It looks pretty much like others that are selling for £50 elsewhere but will this one explode if I fall off and hit my head on something hard?

It will meet all of the minimum requirements for helmets sold in the UK, so it wont explode or necessarily be less safe than any other helmet.

There is more to consider though, like comfort (both in terms of vents/airflow to keep you cool and the quality of the pads used), weight, straps/buckling system.
Chainreactioncycles have a few good prices on helmets at the moment, here are a couple of examples:
Giro Hex £40
Bell sequence £40 (only have small in stock)

Looking at the pics it looks like you have 2 crown races, a big one and a small one. The frame you have has a tapered headtube, right? But you have a 1-1/8 steerer fork, not tapered. Shouldn't you have a reducer in the bottom cup? The pic with the first (larger) crown race is the right one surely? Show us a pic of the headset cups. Are they a different size (top vs bottom)?

Headset cups in the frame are different sizes top and bottom.

New frame requires Integrated 42mm top / Integrated 52.1mm bottom. I have that - Tapered Headset T5 - Internal 42/52

So headset and frame are a match. Forks are RockShox Revelation RLT Dual Air 150mm Suspension Fork 2011. Now it appears that all along i've had it in my head that they are tapered forks - which looking again - they appear they are not. How stupidly dumb is that! No idea where I got the idea that they were tapered forks from. (it was a pre built 456 so never purchased them myself)

****

Guess I need some options to solve that - some kind of reducer or something? (or new tapered forks which is not really an options cost wise!)

Jesus!:(:(

Dont worry, you can get all sorts of adaptor headsets. A 1 1/8 steerer fork in a tapered headtube is no problem.

You might be able to get just the bottom crown race to work with the bearings, etc that you already have, or you might need a different headset. Either way, you dont need new forks.

I'd give On One a call tomorrow and ask what head set they would recommend fitting in your case with 1-1/8 forks. Had a quick look and finding one that would suit is a bit of a minefield. From Cane Creek..

Your Headset
Based on the information you have provided, your headset falls within the tapered standard and requires:
Top Headset:
SHIS:IS42 - 1-1/8" Italian Integrated (ISi) Threadless
Bottom Headset:
SHIS:IS52/30 - 1.5" Integrated (IS) to 1-1/8" Conversion

Damn you! :D

Ended up going for the Bell Variant at £42.

Seems to get good reviews.

Finished :D Just got to tidy the cabling up a little and tweak the derailleurs but other than that it's all up and running, still umming and arring over going SS up front though...

Quite happy with how it's turned out :)

I like this :) Can't say i';ve ever seen one out and about or on the webs

i know this is a hope headset link but the assembly order should be roughly the same..

http://www.hopetech.com/webtop/modules/_repository/documents/HOPEHEADSETS2011Web.pdf

either that or contact SuperStar and see if they have instructions.

cheers - the diagram on the 2nd page is pretty much how it's going together. Ordered the Reducer Crown Race that Johnny linked to - should be here tomorrow and will try again (suppose that will force me finally to get my tax return done tonight!):D

Aye use the new one on it's own. The bigger split ring one you have would be tight on a 1.5" fork, the one you've ordered is the same but with more material in the middle to reduce it down to 30mm to fit 1 1/8th forks.

Because it isn't split you will need to tap it flat on the crown though.

cool - just like the old crown I removed:D

Love that Shova, I rode one that had reducer cups in and it was seriously rapid.

You seem like mr morewood bikes  Shova looks a bit like my Heckler apart from the brace bit near the seat post, much difference in them? A lot of bikes seem to use the same / similar design.

Getting my dads racer bike of him tonight, need to do some road riding (can only go off road once a week so can road ride daily) to build up my fitness for off roading, wayyy to unfit for off-road at the moment :(
