Big comfy cruiser - sub 2k

I heard rumors from when I was a wee baby that Frontera's were actually quite capable off road - but they had shockingly bad reliability, and terrible engines/ride for on-road?

If you get rid of the 4x4 requirement then you'll get some much nicer options. Lexus, Volvo, BMW... all will be superior to a Frontera in everything apart from off road capability.

Is a Frontera all that comfy?

All the crappy old 4x4s I've driven have been horrible. Albeit we're talking Freelanders, X-Trails and the like, so nothing really big.

Hard to find a good one but I had 2 Jeep Cherokee's both of which were around budget (This was a while ago mind you) and both were fine. 4L meant MPG was single figures but that wasn't an issue for me. Find one a with a good LPG system and it's not that much to run.

This will probably end well under a grand.

Nothing on these things costs "that" much to fix.

We've had the Rav-4 (petrol),CRV diesel and X trail. The CRV diesel was the most refined, Rav-4 nicest to drive, and X-trail most accomplished off road.

All 3 were typical Jap plastic fantastic inside, and all 3 were bought with engine problems, the 2.2 cdti in the CRV can suffer from oil pump issues where the little chain will snap and take the bottom end with it. The X-trail had issues with cam chain guides which knackered the chain itself,The Rav-4 2.0 VVTI is the least likely to grenade itself but ours had a problem with the HG. So basically its best to go and check the cars, check the history, check the regularity of oil changes, basic stuff really.

4x4 isn't a necessity. Added bonus. Main requirements are high-ish road position, comfort and economy (so diesel or a very reliable petrol)

Thanks for that. Personally I lie the look of the x trail the most, but there won't be any off roading at all. It's more for a family shopping car, but one that isn't tiring on long journeys and can eat up speed bumps and such with ease and comfort.

+2 for an estate

saab 9-5s are lovely for the money

Yah but its a coinflip as to whether or not you'll get one that works or one that is a utter shed that spends it's life yoyo-ing between breakdown trucks and garages.

LS and GS Lexus' are a good shout too - bullet proof and very comfy indeed.

I think you need to be quite aware of the fact that an SUV only tends to fall under £2k when it's at the end of its life. You may not want an estate, however you've a far better chance of avoiding a crap car if you change your mind.
