I've just walked into town - Leeds - and walked past Waterstones (the one near the top of the Headrow, for those of you who know it!) and expected - as I hear every single day - 'BIG ISSUE! BIG ISSUE' to be crying out from the same dude who's been doing it for years.

I couldn't see the bloke when I walked past and wondered if he'd perhaps moved on, got a job, whatever. Anyway, when I got closer I managed to see him crouched down.

I wondered why he wasn't screaming 'BIG ISSUE!' when I saw he was crouching down TEXTING on his MOBILE PHONE!

It wasn't even a crap phone lol! The guy had a really nice smart mobile phone, complete with camera! (I think it was Motorola!)

Has anyone had any similar experiences? (Thinking back to the Peter Kay sketch where he's congratulated by a Big Issue seller on Phoenix Nights, to which PK asks 'where have you seen it!? Dixons window!? :D )

An old work mate used to sell the big issue around xmas time. Wasn't homeless and parents were fairly well off. He could make up to £80 in one day!

Of course he's got a mobile phone, he can hardly have a land line if he's home less :)

LOL

:D You can't argue with that :D

edit:easy up on the big issue seller. One more big issue seller is one less beggar, more often than not.

Can you tell us what the requirements are for selling the Big Issue please?

1. Have a mangey dog.
2. Always smoke.
3. Always have a hilarous saying such as "Selling the magazine that makes you invisible".

One guy at London Bridge used to come up with cheesy stuff..

"Joy to be found, for only a pound!"
"Don't delay, buy one today!"
etc

I've actually seen two Big Issue sellers have a bit of an altercation over a spot as well

For as long as they have better trainers then me they have no hope!

I heard one guy in Manchester offering "Two free staples with every copy" quite funny but i didn't buy one.

Where I live in Crewe there is a Muslim girl trying to sell it, talk about being down on your luck.

The kid that sells them outside Sainsburys always has new clothes than me and more expensive newer looking trainers.

Used to be a guy who regularly sold the Big Issue just outside the flat I used to have in Edinburgh. Flatmates and I would buy the odd issue....until we saw him one day getting into and driving off in his Jag......

So what you're saying is that a homeless person dresses better than you? :p
