Big mistake to buy a 6950 or 6970 today?

Just took a proper look at those. Do you want to reconsider that statement?

^That's taken from the link you gave. People really should read the things they link to before they make these types of comments.

GTX 570: 49fps on ultra.

6970: 44fps on ultra.

Yeah sorry but the Ultra settings benchmarks wasn't as clear as High to Low benchmarks and it should have been. And on one of benchmarks I linked the 6970 does beat the 570 anyway which you have conveniently ignored....

1. As I said I was surprised as I did and always have thought of the 6970 and 570 being pretty darn similar in performance.

2. I wasn't acting like an AMD fanboy or anything advocating that VRAM is the be all and end all and that the 6970 pwns this that and the other, so chill out dude, eh?

I am surprised by the 1600p results you linked though, the 6970 generally outperforms the 570 at that resolution.

the 6970 is a bit faster generally but in bf3 the msaa is not kind and i think 570 with msaa on is a few fps quicker

without msaa though the 6970 is faster at same settings.

but.... ati are doing the new drivers and this may help ;) so basically there both about level.

Ppl should take no notice of all these fps comparison charts. On Battlefield 3 I'm getting a solid 60fps on the highest ultra settings @ 1920 x 1080. The chart above tells me it should be about 40.

OK, I'm buying today then, should I go 6950? which cards have possibility of unlocking 6970 shaders?

Or should I just get the OcUK 6970 which is only about 40 more I think. Ta peeps

Unless something has changed recently I think the only cards that would still unlock is the Sapphire Toxic with the rear vent cooler and MAYBE the dirt 3. I know you need the ones with the bios switches on the PCB. Everything else got laser-locked.

Although I have 2 unlocked 6950's myself, I wouldn't lose any sleep if they didn't, the clockspeeds are what counts, just put it to 6970 clocks and you probably won't notice the difference.

Asus ATI Radeon HD 6950 DirectCU II 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **Supplied with Battlefield 3 & Deus Ex PC Games** for £240, 3 slot cooler, quiet and cool with varying success on unlocking:

Or HIS ATI Radeon HD 6950 IceQ X Turbo for £200:

@kissenger, not bothered if the 570 beats the 6970 in BF3 or not, just pointing out for the benefit of the op that bit-techs BF3 verdict is flawed.

Care to back that up? I've a feeling your blunt reply may have been in haste - do some reading.

Lol, i've done my reading because I've bought one of these cards... the vast bulk of the TF3 dont unlock, particularly the newer ones (which have been laser cut by amd)

linky

What you find is that you can unlock the max clock speed on it, but you can't get the shader count up (usually)

I suggest you do some reading on this particular card.

Depends, water-cooling tends to give awesome results; so if thats a possibility for you then get one that will take a full cover waterblock
