Big mistake to buy a 6950 or 6970 today?

for those who speak about Nvidia killers, just we cannot believe you anymore..

do I have to remind you what happened with 6970 before it comes out, 50% faster and better than gtx580?? or buldozer, 50% better than sandy bridge cpus? AMD lovers, love also the 50%... why... why not 10-20-30-40-60... lol? or any Ati product before the release date?

I am afraid that when you hear about a tree with lots and big apples, just get a small basket with u... lol

I cant believe it personally

No I am not, but I have to admit, I am an old 2900xt user and I never bought any amd/ati product since then (it destroyed 1 motherboard, 1 cpu, 2 psu's).. Just don’t believe lies.. or dreamers. And I speak with facts, not lullaby’s..

So a 6950 is not recommended because it will destroy your system.. I'm not sure what lies you are on about tbh. The thread is about the op waiting for the new 7 series or getting a 6 series now

I've just bought another msi 6950 twin frozr ii to go with my other one for crossfire goodness. Gonna unlock it like i did my first one so that will mean two overclocked 6970's in crossfire. I'm pretty sure that will beat out performance of the 7950.

You disgust me.

Does it? wouldn't know, don't have a 570.

I do know that a friend of mine has a GTX 480 @ 850. And he had the same problems I did (especially in multiplayer).

I also know that on this forum a couple of days ago some one calculated what BF3 takes from Vram when in ultra @ 4xFSAA @ 1900x1200 and it ate 1600mb or so of Vram.

If you don't think Vram is important then hey, I guess that's up to you. But, with games like Flatout 3 demanding either a 6970 or 590 for ultra settings and an install size of 20+gb? your call.

What I also found strange was the benchmarks I have read on BF3. Apparently my card drops to 33FPS. But last night I played single player (the Iranian city storm to the bank) and my card never dropped below 39FPS. I then overclocked it to 1ghz 1.3v and it never dropped below 44.

They really ought to make these benchmarks clearer, explaining *exactly* under what circumstances they were performed (multiplayer? single player? what level? because the flying one I never saw below 60 FPS).

Edit. My bad, that was a stock 6970. Forget that mine is 940 now on stock and 1ghz if I feel like it.

480 sli (overclocked), every single setting set to max 2560x1600, vsync on 60fps no more no less.

Was it the fastest single GPU though?

Because if memory serves that title belonged to the whoppingly expensive GTX 280.

Infact, it was only when the 4890 launched that ATI were once again trading blows at the top.

GTX 280 had that title (though IMO it didn't really deserve it. It was just fast, but hot loud and horrible).

GTX 480 also had that title. It was also loud and hot and IMO not worth the £450 it was changing hands for when released*

* Please don't bring RRP into this. We all know what happens when there is a shortage. Look at the 590 for an example.

Now obviously my philosophy is more in depth than I could explain quickly. And the last thing I want to do is sit down and do a fifteen year history lesson on graphics cards and their prices. I looked around the other night, and the 5850 at lauch was supposed to cost £200. The 5870 at launch was supposed to cost £250. Those were the launch prices given out by ATI a week before launch.

And what did they cost once they realised that stocks were going to be short and Nvidia had no response? £250 for a 5850 and £300+ for a 5870.

No, but that wasn't what you asked. If memory serves, the 4870 was the fastest single gpu in the range at the time of release.

GTX280 was an interesting case because it released at an expensive price (as you say) but that price didn't last long. The price was slashed to under £250 by September (more than 6 months before it had competition from the 4890) and it had only come out in June.

What will happen with these new cards, who knows, I'd be surprised if they are priced under £300 especially with a depreciated currency and increased VAT compared to 3 years ago.

Well if the hint left yesterday on these forums was anything to go by then the 7970 is going to cost at least £450. Obviously no one can guess the exact price, but when Gibbo said that the 7970 was going to cost almost double that of a £269 6970L then I think it's fair to assume they ain't gonna be cheap.

ATI/AMD cards are usually cheaper at launch than Nvidia cards. However, that is only the case because you usually get what you pay for at launch. Every single last FPS in a game is charged for, that's what a marketing sector of a corporation does. They sit down, look at what's out, what goes how fast and then price accordingly.

All apart from Bulldozer fail of course, but those prices are now being rectified.

If, as I rightly said, the 4870 was not faster than the 280 then they would have been completely stupid to try and charge more than the 280 for it. Again, they'd have sat down and calculated what they could sell it for when compared to other products, hence, it was cheaper than the 280 because it wasn't as fast.

If these 7970s are to be compared in reality to the hype, and they really are that much faster than a 580 then the £500 sort of guessed price from Gibbo's comment seems perfectly apt. Let's say that a 580 is £350 min. That was the best price I found the web over when looking two weeks ago. Now let's say the 7970 is 30% faster. Add 30% to £350 (an extra 120ish) and you're nearing £500.

Meaning that what I said a few days ago (and now) about paying for every last FPS you will see in a game is absolutely bang on.

Lol, i've done my reading because I've bought one of these cards... the vast bulk of the TF3 dont unlock, particularly the newer ones (which have been laser cut by amd)

linky

What you find is that you can unlock the max clock speed on it, but you can't get the shader count up (usually)

I suggest you do some reading on this particular card.

The same as I just bought. Due to its cooling it will overclock / unlock nicely to similar to 6970 without any issues.

All I want to do is play Bf3 at 1080p on medium at 60fps+. If it goes higher on the detail than that it will be a bonus. The trouble is you can wait forever for the next new thing rather than enjoy something now. If newer gpu's are better I can always sell it.

just gotta laugh tbh theres no real games apart from bf3 which really are testing new cards they gunna have there work cut out selling these high end cards when basically 99 percent of games can be maxxed out on a 100 pound card !

never mind a 600-700 pound card :D

buy a 560 2gb or 6950 2gb and save your cash till next consoles are out ;)

Very valid point, apart from the 100 pound maxing out 99% of games. Unless you're talking about 1024x768 res :D

nah buy a second hand ati 5850 only bf3 that cant be maxxed at 1920x1080

even that it plays well.

its not like its low res either.

unless the games come which they wont until next console is out they gunna have to do some hard selling to shift em cause people can play everything except bf3 more or less maxxed with cheapish cards so why shell out 500 + for one un optimised game ?

best thing is if they actually made or worked on a better msaa option then bf3 would run flawless on a 5850 . its just poorly optimised.

even some guy has modded bf3 to look better with higher fps  dice fail tbh.

haah really? that's quality

Second hand you didn't specify and is a different point.

yeah guy made a injecter and has thousands of thanks and so on but dice do nothing . even though they could optimise the game better

secondhand or not 6870 120 new. like said before bf3 is only new game and for next year that will test your cards . all rest console garbage nicely spun to the pc market.
