So basically I bought a new waterblock off ebay and the guy hadn't
cleaned it properly. Having fully dismantled the waterblock I
removed a small metal sheet which revealed a second O-Ring which
slipped out of place as soon as I fully removed the sheet. I've spent
the best part of an hour trying to put it back in place but it just
doesn't want to go back in. It would seem the ring is just a little too
big which leaves a little excess but when trying to put this in place the
whole ring will fall back out.

Now I'm considering to cut it and try to fit in that way but I'm guessing
that's a last resort horrible idea. The groove which the ring is supposed
to fit in is very shallow meaning it's forever slipping out of place. At the
moment I'm using some electrical tape I had laying around just to hold it
in place (so it shapes well). Does anyone here at overclockers have any
advice on how to get this sucker back in place?

Also here's a picture for your amusement.

I had the same problem with a waterblock, ended up using some silicone sealant in it. Bodge job, but it did the trick, just have to avoid getting it in the channels or slipping out the sides.

Errr why? He has bought it and dismantled it to clean it and has come across a problem due to him opening it.. Dunno why its the sellers problem... there are plenty of other ways to clean it other than taking it to pieces..

You could try going to a DIY and have a look at there packs of o-rings you might be lucky and get one that fits.

try putting it in the fridge for an hour to get it to shrink a bit

Good Idea I'll do that now.

Also I found a product on ebay called " Waterproof Silicone Grease" used by plumbers to resit O-rings so if the fridge trick doesn't work I'm going to buy that.

Just keep trying. The O ring does fit, but it can indeed be difficult getting it to seat. If you've any experience fitting tyres to a bicycle it's the same strategy, get a bit in the groove, hold it down with your finger and get the next bit on.

The PVC tape isn't a winning idea, when you take it off the O ring will come loose.

put a Very very very very small amount of greases in the grove and the o ring will stick to it till you add the top of block

Well Just got it out of the fridge after about 3 hours. Managed to get the
top back on and I'm about to give it a little leak test. :)

Anyone who posted thanks for the help.
