I wonder if this can be a poll?

Im constantly bouncing between 2 camps when thinking of my next car either

a) heavy car, big engine, 250-300BHP

b) lighter, more nimble car.

I'm talking about would you rather have a brute of a machine, or have your fun at legal speeds :)

I for one couldn't care less if my car topped out before it hit 100mph, i would just want it to be fun and accelerate there quick enough :p

I have always been attracted to the British sportscar idea which is a fairly nippy engine enclosed in a car with RWD that weighs as much as a shoebox. :)

Well, depends if you want a bit of luxury or not really.

Running costs do tend to be high on big heavy cars as parts are bigger etc (tyres, brakes etc) more fuel gets burned etc

i enjoy my lightweight car tons, 720kg, 4wd drive, turbo charged, air cond, leather seats, leccy windows all round, power steering etc. 0 to 60 around 8 seconds.

classic and sports car said from 0 to 20 u need a fireblade to keep up and would batter most things off the lights :) also great mpg if you drive really frugal. i get around 180 from about 17 quid of optimax :)

yup, its all about the weight for me :) you don't need huge amounts of power if the car is light enough and with a lighter car you will get a much more nimble drive (if its setup well)

While it is damn fun nailing it through the 100barrier at some insane rate there are only so many places and times you can do that, however there are tonnes and tonnes of lovely windey contry roads all over the uk where you can have loads of fun within the speed limit in a car that will dart around corners like it was on rails :)

I would want this :D

But with the 300BHP super charger u can get on it :)

i think a good balance is struck with preludes / celicas etc - i certainly dont want any new car to be lardier than that :)

Lightness for me. So much easier to get performance from a light car. You can easily build a 7 with 150bhp that'll hit 0-60 in under 4 seconds and cost under £8k :D

excellent handling comes as standard

Weight is one of the most important factors in a car for me.

Although I wouldn't grumble about a bit of poke going through the rear's of something lardy.

It really depends if you want a pure drivers car in which case go lightweight, or a car full of the luxuries and that means to get similar speed you need big power.

Simple really :)

Horses for courses.

Adding lightness brings advantages in performance, fuel economy, handling and tyre life. Possible disadvantages in safety and noise.

For high speed cruising, some more substantialy built would be quieter, more comfortable and likely safer in an accident.

That's exactly how I feel. I love acceleration. Probably a reason why I got into motorbikes.

I've gone for nimble and fun.

However having said that I do love big block engined cars... but if I had to live with one or the other, it'd have to be the fun one.

I'd probably agree with that... though I think I'd still prefer my fun little car. :)
