I still need to get a drive in a caterham superlight 400

400kg of RWD goodness

HT

400 refers to it's power to weight ratio, it does not weigh 400kg. You need a bike engine to get close to 400kg.

The superlight isn't really all that light or powerful for the astonishing amount they charge for it compared to what you can get from some lesser known manufacturers that are equally as good.

I wonder if this can be a poll?

Im constantly bouncing between 2 camps when thinking of my next car either

a) heavy car, big engine, 250-300BHP

b) lighter, more nimble car.

I'm talking about would you rather have a brute of a machine, or have your fun at legal speeds :)

I for one couldn't care less if my car topped out before it hit 100mph, i would just want it to be fun and accelerate there quick enough :p

Hmm, my car weighs nearly 2 tonnes, but, has a paltry 193 odd bhp..... Still good for 0-60 MPH/0-100 KH: 9.6seconds & 140 MPH.

It's more than enough for me, and its very nimble for what it is! :)

Now my truck, thats 420BHP and 44tonnes, what category would that be in?

I can't really vote on this poll. Because I fall in the middle. I've driven small cars (current one is the second smallest Toyota made at the time), and I've driven big heavy brutes (can't get much more so than my truck).

I would much rather drive a fairly large vehicle (Dodge Grand Caravan) with a mid-sized V-6 in it (3.3L - 3.8L). That way you get the best of both worlds. Half decent acceleration when you need to get off a side road into a busy one, yet still gets halfway decent fuel mileage (25-28mpgUS / 30-34mpgUK), and wraps you up in solid comfort like driving a lazy-boy recliner!! :p

0-60 9.6 seconds? Is that it? I thought the 728 was reasonably fast :(

Its less than 200bhp, and weighs about 1900kg, making about 100bhp/tonne

Still its not really the point of them if you get them in a good spec :)

Well, thats the 0-60 with the auto box, its certainly feels quicker than that suggests, its overtaking ability is very good, but, you do have to use all the revs, big car, small (ish) engine.

It's hardly a car for the traffic light grand prix start, its not exactly built for that though.

The 740i is the one I'd have bought if speed was more important than fuel consumption, I bought mine to chill out in after my days driving, and it suits my needs perfectly.

I very nearly bought an e36 328i, now that was VERY quick!

!

Exactly why i fancy an E38 or a range rover, something luxury and soothing to drive in my own time. Speed is nice but i am not so sure whether its a good idea for me, plus it costs a bomb.

speed is very nice, keeping my licence is nicer (why I did'nt opt for the 328i) alas, e38 BMW's do cost a bomb to run, but, if you like that sort of car, there worth it imo.

I'm still not sure my e38 is right for me, I forget about this completely however, whenever I drive it. :)
140MPH from 100BHP/tonne isn't half bad really, I had'nt thought of it that way before...

Tricky really, I would prefer a light car but I also love big sledgehammer turbo power. Not sure where 1260kgs come into it, its definately not light but its not exactly hugely heavy.
