BIG PROBLEM!!! HELP!!!

OK, so I reinstalled my OS, and then installed all my drivers again, i did the hdtune test and it said everything was great with my HDD, but I am still having the same problem. Any more suggestions? So far I've ruled out: Viruses, OS problem, HDD problem. What else could it be?

Could you post a screenshot of the hard drive test results?

Next up is memtest, preferably from cd/usb stick/otherwise outside the operating system. The issue may be ram, though it doesn't sound much like it.

What power supply are you using?

Is the vista disk visibly damaged?

Could it be a heat issue? Maybe the cooler isn't properly seated on the cpu?

Perhaps download a free trial of Everest -this will show you some temps etc

[edit] might well be faulty hdd as already suggested

- reseat your ram
- reseat cooler and HSF with reapplied paste
- check all HDD SATA connection cables are secure
- run prime95 for a couple of hours
- run intelburntest for a couple of hours
- check temps all the while using RealTemp

please post more detailed spec, like PSU etc.

In case you are wondering, to simplify the great advice above, they are running through each component in turn to see if it has a problem. Any system has the following components which can be checked in turn.

Power supply (PSU)
Mainboard
CPU
Heatsink (HSF)
RAM
Video card (GPU)
HDD
On top of all these sits the Operating system (OS)

You have eliminated the HDD and the OS. Now they are telling you to check the RAM using memtest and the temperature of the components which can cause instability if it gets too high. You can also use the Task Manager to see what apps are running. Do you recognise them all ? Do you need them all ?

If you need the system in a hurry, back up the data and format the hard drive, then re-install OS and drivers only. If it's unstable after that, then it is a hardware issue. Whatever the problem is, it occurred recently, so have you changed anything in the system ? New hardware ? New software ? If not, then something has broken down and you will need to run through the individual components one at a time to find out which one.

If it was hdd failure you'd probably be seeing error messages with windoze complaining about corrupted files/drivers etc

Ram seems more likely now I think more about it but, as said above, you'd be seeing blue screens as well as just freezing. Probably.
Run memtest for sure. It's boring but you gotta do it ;) You don't need to run all of the tests. Someone on here can tell you which are the most important ones.
If there's any errors try removing one stick of ram & then retesting (I assume you've got more than 1 stick). If all's ok then test the other stick on its own.

OK, I'm trying to download memtest but it won't work. None of the downloadable files seem to want to open. Also, I have a 600W OCZ PSU, not entirely sure which one. Temps are fine, i've checked them many times and they seem to be constantly low. A link to memtest would be great, although I haven't had a single blue screen, so I'm not sure if that's the problem. I'm running prime95 as we speak, hopefully that will give us some clues about what's wrong, then I plan to run intelburntest. Let me know if you guys come up with any other ideas.

Links to all of the apps mentioned are here.

hang on -you're running prime95 with low temps and no freeze ? This would lead me to suspect that the GPU has the issue. What apps are you running when it freezes ? GPU intensive ?

Have you changed anything in the system recently ? Was it knocked ? Have you checked all cards are seated correctly ?

Yes everything is seated fine. It was working perfectly when I first got it, and it has not been knocked or hit since. Also, I haven't downloaded anything. Just basic games, and drivers, nothing illegal or over-intense. It freezes very randomly, sometimes it may take a couple of hours, sometimes is may do it just 30 seconds after launching, and it makes no difference what I'm running. I've got nothing on this PC, just the OS and software drivers. The thing that puzzles me is that everything was working perfectly, and suddenly it doesn't want to run. I want to try to avoid dismantling it, as that's a lot of hassle for me, but worst case scenario, I am quite prepared to do so.

Did you buy this recently as a complete system ? If so, get them to fix it.

Otherwise I would go the format and re-install route. I still think it sounds like a dodgy HDD. Do you have a spare you can swap in ?

Unfortunately no, I don't. And no, I bought this separately and put it together myself. If someone can definitely identify it as being the HDD I will happily send it back for repair. I need this PC guys!

Have you been inside yet and physically checked for obvious stuff. Like re-seating all cards and cables ?

Did you run memtest ?
What PSU ?

Random freeze really sounds like HDD. Can you borrow another to test system ?

I was trying to avoid opening it up to be honest as it is in a very tight and awkward place, plus it has a lot plugged in and around it, so that was my last resort to be honest. If you guys honestly think it will help then by all means I will do it. I don't have a spare HDD, is there a way to make sure it is the HDD before i unhook it and sent it for repair. I did a HDD test and it said my HDD was fine. Will run memtest in a second, but I really don't think it is the RAM.

OK I just ran intelburntest, on high, and I succeeded, so I think that rules out my CPU and RAM. Are there any stability tests for GPU's and HDD's. If so could you list them here so I can run them. I really need to identify the problem guys, my education rests on it, all of my files are on there. (They're backed up, but it's programs like Photoshop and Dreamweaver that I will need very soon and very often).

Well, I suppose good news, I ran HD Tune and that is not the problem, it came back 100% good, not a single bad MB. But the bad news with that is that I am still looking for the problem, going to run a GPU stress test next. Keep helping guys!

Again, another thing off the problems list. I just ran OCCT GPU Stress Test for an hour nd my GPU passed with flying colours. So far I've ticked off:
CPU
RAM
GPU
HDD
TEMPS
VIUSES
I know there's more things I can test, but where could my problems be?
