Legally i think a helmet is all thats required but i imagine if you turned up in t-shirt and trainers even if they would take you out they'd be looking for a reason to fail you.
I turned up in Vans, Jeans, Textile Jacket, Gloves, Helmet and still got told off for not wearing appropriate footwear and normal jeans when I did my A2 Mod1. Like @iron_monkey said, its better to give a good impression of yourself, most of the instructors are strict on rules and safety...

I would definitely suggest wearing the best gear you can afford I've been in a few motorbike accidents and I dread to think what I'd look like or if I'd even be here if I hadn't been wearing good gear.

That was 8 years ago, my gear hasn't turned up yet. I use to wear 2pc leathers, Boots etc.

I've got a good helmet, two pairs of gloves to pick from (1x Alpinestars, can't remember what the others are, but solid AF), Dainese jacket + D3O back insert, kevlar jeans with several armour plates and Dainese shoes. Should suffice.

As for bike, I'll be upgrading my commuter as a priority, to a Honda ADV 350. I want that because I can ferry my wife around on it too, and keep her helmet under the seat.

Once we've bought a house with a garage I'll likely get an RS660.

I wear all the appropriate gear except for wearing normal trainers. I just much prefer them, they are better for changing gear, for braking, and for stability. But i have only tried 1 pair of proper (above the ankle) biker boots. Maybe i need to try more.

I remember seeing a pic of a bikers foot that had been caught under the bike whilst it was sliding down the road when he had trainers or suchlike on.
It didn’t just wear his skin away, it wore away his toe bones.
It was horrific to see, and as a consequence I’ll only ever wear my Sidi full boots or my TCX ankle boots.

Alpinestars SMX6 once broke in are soooo comfy :D They also saved my foot when it was dragged down the road under 200kg bike, I had to bin them as they were pretty beat up after that, but they did their job.

Going to repost what I put in the Footwear question thread back in May:

"100% agree with Hades. For my accident (still not settled), I ended up with my right foot trapped under the bike. The engine block of a Gen 2 Hayabusa sat on top of my ankle for around 30+ minutes because the priority for the 999 guys was 1) cut my gear off, 2) get the IV painkillers in, 3) wait for the painkillers to work, 4) move the bike without dislodging the broken left leg and risking internal bleeding. I had full ankle protection from my boots.

Now imagine that in your work boots. Don’t do it to yourself."

Best of luck chap, i found the mod 1 bit harder than 2. I'll sure you'll do it easy mate.

Ditto Daytonas, and then every other boot that is half that price that I've owned other than my huge adventure ones, which do lose a bit of feel. Go for sports touring style boots and get decent protection and comfort. Given SBS and others have many sat around to try on, there's no reason not to. :) Wearing no gloves probably gives better lever control (ref mx gloves) but doesn't mean no gloves is a good idea.

The thought of no gloves gives me shivers when I think of the mess you used to make it your hands just falling over as a kid but it also seems to be pretty common. Full gear and then their hands just taking in the breeze.

Gloves are important too, your hands are the first thing you put down if you fall off and i don't know about you but i like having hands. I came off on a track day and my good quality gloves were shredded by the time I'd stopped sliding, my hands were fine though.

^ without a doubt yes, i've always wore good quality gloves and wear them everytime i go out on my bike irrespective of distance or weather. it's the boots i've skipped since years ago trying them and not really liking them but i can't judge them all on the 1 pair that i tried so i'm going to give them another go.

Looks like I'm gonna need more storage. Needs to be universal, I'm not spending £150 on a rack for a bike that likely won't see the end of the month in my ownership. Waterproof, decent quality, able to be tied down to the pillion of my scoot. Will also need some bungie cords or net or whatever, anyone got any ideas?

EDIT:

It's going on the back of this, so should have a few mounting / tie down points:

Kriega are great bits of kit and fit practically anything I used to have a full set of the tail packs and I've still got a back pack and waist pack, both will probably out last me. Very pricy these days though.

Seen a few people recommend these at a fraction of the price, exactly the same setup as the kreigas.
