Holy mistakes! How annoying! Did you keep calm, and is it all insurance fun now?

Yeah always keep calm. He didn't do it on purpose and was quite worried.

He asked if we can get it repaired out of insurance, I said I'd have a think and see what I can do. Rang Dobles this morning to get a quote for the repairs and they said they can't quote without inspecting the bike. Tried to ring the guy again and he's not answering. I'm now on the phone to his insurance company. As much as I'd like to settle it out of insurance, I can't guarantee that there aren't any bent / damaged internal bits, especially as it's a tupperware bike.

Also, the Arai made me want to rip it to pieces yesterday. It's like someone specifically designed the visor to be as finnicky as possible to open. I'll need to figure out an easier way of doing this as it's extremely frustrating.

@LowEndTorque those things are great, but keep in mind that the quality is very questionable and could leave you stranded.

You are not the only one.:D

The reviews were mixed when checked further. I will get the Rokit one from SBS in the future.

Yeah when a friend reversed into my k1300S, I took it to BMW and they found so many bits damaged that I hadn't noticed. Got expensive very quiickly.

Also I sympathise with the Arai! Their dedication to having it all as smooth as possible somehow results in their visor mechanism being a right pain in the bum. Was the same when I got my first one 15 odd years ago! And as I hardly use (another) Arai now, I forget any nuanced way when I do. It always feels like i'm going to break it. And given they don't (still?) do internal sun visors, it does necessitate swapping visors fairly often.

Is that the reason for so many Cat N bikes on autotrader? (that look brand new) they've been dropped, other repairs but some are hidden so it's written off?

Well this was fun.

What aisle are the Arais in?

Can I get a sense check please guys.

I'm pretty much 90% there on buying a brand new V-Strom 800 DE but it would involve chopping in my GSX-S and my 2013 V-Strom. My two bikes are getting me £7k off and the new bike is coming with panniers, top box and crash guards.

I find these days I ride my current V-Strom way more than the sports bike and to be honest, have more fun riding it.

Tell me I'm doing the right thing! :D

Definitely. 12 years is a LOT of time in bike tech, so the new one should have loads more toys. If you're not riding the GSX then get shot, no point paying tax/insurance for a garage ornament.

I agree with chopping in sports for something you'll actually ride. And I did the ultimate of riding in on an S1000RR and riding out on an R1250GS!

But new or nearly new is where I'd be doing the calculations.

And lastly what do you enjoy doing and what do you want to do more of, realistically. Ie if it's long ass trips, or is it just comfort and still riding shall we say progressively.

The GS was my equivalent for what I'd ride more on long distance stuff, but my KTM added in the latter part that I also very much enjoy. The idiocy factor!

If you're going to spend more time in the saddle; that's always a good thing. Is the brand new bike worth the extra cash to you over your current 2013? That is the real question.

Thanks guys.

I did a little trip to Normandy as well as some moto camping this year and that is definitely my kind of riding. The sportsbike is obviously fund but tbh, it's just too fast and impractical. One twist of the throttle and you're doing over 50 in a 30 etc.

I might take the GSX out today just to make sure. :D

Have you considered the S1000 GX or Vstrom is your go to? :)
