Bilingual clap trap.

i know only too well :p

at uni in aberystwyth and everything is in welsh before english, takes ages to try and figure out whats tyring to be said :(

I'm Welsh. Grew up in Cardiff and lived here all my life (I'm 24). I was forced to learn welsh in school which I hated - I didn't see the point and would rather learn something useful like French. Anyway, I only did it for 2 years and now I can't remember any of it.

I now work for the IT dept in the Welsh Assembly and it's only now that the Welsh language has started to REALLY annoy me. There are around 2500 people working for the Welsh Assembly and they can all speak English, so can all the Ministers. But all of the official documents must be in both languages. So much of tax payers money is wasted on translating things from English to Welsh for no reason! Everyone speaks English!

We even have a special phone in the IT dept that only a welsh speaker can answer. It's for users who want IT support in Welsh! Now they are asking for a Welsh version of Windows!! I mean WTF?! We told them to ****** off.

We also have problems with printer drivers because some of them have trouble printing Welsh characters.

And finally, Welsh schools that force you to speak welsh. This means you learn everything in Welsh (except English of course). What a stupid idea. What happens when these kids go to university and have to start learning their subjects in English?! They are probably going to have problems understanding things.

All of you that consider convenience, a larger priority over the fact that our own language is taught, learnt, spoken and written again, should be ashamed of themselves.

Where is this I've never really even seen anyone use welsh outside of the pub :/

Well I'm in a small village (well Hamlet now seeing as the Post Office has shut) between Pontarddulais and Gorseinon, I'd saw 25% is Welsh speaking.

Cynwel Elfed where my wife grew up is between Carmarthen and Newcastle Emlyn (she lived in Blaen-y-coed), there it's about 75% Welsh speaking.

The "Cheap if ya Welsh Boyo" Scone shop is at Pontarddulais, and the old tart with her bloody Welsh Egg is in Llanelli Market near the Newsagents.

I'm not talking about killing it off, speak it, write it, do whatever you please with it but don't waste loads of tax payers money forcing it upon everyone.

The fact about the matter is that English, American or British is needed around the world to do business... the reason that the majority of welsh speakers learn english is to better their chance of getting a good career, as they have a better chance of getting a higer paid job in one of the big three english cities, London, Manchester, Birmingham...

Welsh is a language that most people could live without in this country, but I dont think vice versa... I know that if I only spoke welsh I would not make as much money as I'm earning now... calling suppliers that all speak english... English language dominance extends from both the british empire, as it use to be, and now through American Dominance as the number one world power...

Welsh is having such a surge due to Welsh pride, and the fact that there are small pockets of Wales that still do use the Welsh language as their first language...

I'm Welsh myself (as I'm sure anyone except a retard could discover) and I'm pretty appauled my the majority of the replys from both Welsh and non-Welsh posters.

In reply to all the English posters, you all seem to be completely ignorant of another countries culture and heritage, and Kahn being a bit of a ***** to be honest.

As for the Welsh posters who are saying forcing Welsh is a complete waste of money. It's a part of your country, have you never heard of national pride? Would you rather the language of your country died and was never spoken again? Talk about patriotism...

I'm 20, moved to England when I was 3, and I literally knew no english whatsoever, so it's a load of you people saying that English is the first language in Wales, you just have no idea.

To be honest, and it's none of my business how much you earn (don't really care! :p ), but if you ONLY spoke Welsh, I think you'd be surprised just how much business and thus revenue you'd get.

Wales has, whether you choose to like it or not, gone through a big change recently. The Welsh are extremely proud people of late and there are a lot of businesses that are converting either their paperwork or electronic suite into Welsh because it makes them feel more independent.

What's patriotism got to do with it? The Scots are proud of their country but they speak English and you don't see them holding themselves back for the sake of pride.

I don't think I knew much English when I was 3 years old either...

You get a lot of the same over here in Canada. I've yet to meet a Canadian who speaks French (let alone would class it as their first language) yet the whole country insists on printing everything in both English and French.

I know I'm on the wrong side of the country to get the French speakers, and that there is obviously far more on the East coast but it still seems like a total waste of money to have everything printed twice. Think of all the money that could be saved and put to better use employing more teachers and doctors. Instead it just makes people feel better because then can hang on a little longer to a dead and useless past.

At least French is useful. Isn't it the 2nd or 3rd most spoken language in the world?

There are only 3 million people in Wales, I'd guess only a fraction of those speak Welsh as a first language.

Yes but you don't hear about Gaelic dieing out do you.
Is it more a case of "Cymru am byth" or "twll din pob sais"?

If the former, I'm right with you. After all, it is in your culture etc.... However, is there a need for all the multiplicity in government info?

The trouble with the Welsh language nutts is it's English tax payers money that they are wasting and the amenities for the Wlesh people that are suffering. For example the Welsh NHS spent the cost of a new childrens Hospital on making all the signs in the existing Hospitals bi-lingual which makes for nice big confusing signs and a ditinct lack of a specialist childrens hopsital in Wales.

there are countless other examples such as having all speaches at the welsh assembly simultaneously translated into welsh for a feed which it has been confirmed nobody listens too as they prefer to listen to the origional speaker. Role on independence and let the fools do what they will.

The current drive to revive an almost dead language in both a waste of money and a sure fire way to set the Welsh economy back even further as companies look else where due to the additional costs of producing dual language everything.

Oh and don't get me started on S4C apparently the most expensive TV chanell in the world if measured on a per viewer basis!

(I lived in wales for 20 years my opinions are valid)

You see I think this arguement is a disaster as if you look it. Your money (english taxpayers money ) is actually going on armed forces

If scotland and wales were to gain independence they wouldn't need to have a foreign policy so the scottish and welsh taxpayers would save millions straight away as they wouldn't have to fund IRAQ and afghanistan since most immigrants come to London scots and welsh would be keep apart from that problem as london could no longer dump them on the north and west.

I agree however, that having everything in two languages is stupid everything should be in welsh I don't know why they have english at all?
