Bin men on strike

It's going to be privatised...

Privatising it will raise standards for the public, and surely ensure that all employees will be paid their correct market rate.

That being said I sympathise with being given a 5k pay cut, though surely as the private company takes over they will need extra capacity, hence there'll be vacancies for experienced bin men.

Seems logical that all will actually be alright. Thankfully my bin is still being emptied, though by whom I am not sure.

its funny how people say it should be min wage, working outside in all weathers walking 12+ miles a day while hurling bins about that can weigh up to 100kg's, running the chance of being bitten by dogs, stuck with neddles and glass from ripped bags (yes everyones on bins but bags are still used a fair bit), and of course running the risk of getting run over (localy thats happend 3 times in the past 10 years).

as for the leeds strike, i cant blame them for doing it. going from £18k basic to £12k (min wage) basic is a fair ole drop. sure they MAY get most of it back in bonuses, but what was wrong with them doing a very hard job for a fair rate of pay in the first place.

lol WUT?

if it isnt in a bin they dont take it away so no bags are carried and no risk of needles poking through bags.

they dont throw anything around they are wheelie bins these days in the 80s ans earli 90s they were steel round bins that had to be carried and it was probably very hard work.

the risk of beeing run over shouldnt even factor in to anything.

they wont even take a bin away if the lid isnt shut.

They'll need less bin men if it's privatised. Bin men will be incentivised to be more productive, which will mean less of them are required. Everybody benefits from this, except the bin men who do not end up employed. However, as it stands it would appear we're paying too much for them. If I'm wrong and there's no extra milage to be gained by performance related pay and/or privitisation then bin men won't lose out.

Live in Leeds also, bins STILL haven't been emptied, beyond a joke

For anyone in the dark on the matter, bin men are on strike over the council knocking 6 grand from their wage then offering it back in bonus for (IIRC)

it isn't exactly a skilled role and we need to cut public spending so I guess this is an attempt at making things more efficient - as long as the bonus is achievable then fair enough tbh... might be a bit tough on the bin men but its not as though there aren't plenty of others out there who could do their jobs....

Plastic bags where my parents, my girlfriends parents and where I live in Birmingham.

All within about three miles but different areas. No fancy wheely bins here just overflowing black plastic bin bags.

Or just have a fixed pay per area, that way if they get it done quickly they have the day to themselves, if they drag it out, they're not getting any overtime, as clearly it could be done quicker

All the bin men I saw while out on the road were very slow, and very, very lazy.

Even worse since the lazy ******** wont take a slightly full bin, open or close gates, take a bin thats a couple of inches away from the curb...........

They are useless.

hmm If I left my rubbish at the kerbside in a bin they would assume the bin was rubbish to and crush it :|
Down here they prefer to take bags and will attempt to move them regardless, there is also a road-sweeper type chap that follows the route picking up any debris that is left.
They get about 16k here iic, drivers/reliefs get more meaning that reliefs are generally doing non-driving for most of the year but being paid as a driver :|
Anyway, my take on it is that while I do sympathise there are many people that would take one of these jobs, though probably more that wouldnt.

No offence to bin men... but they were alll warned at school as to what would happen if they did not get a good education! Can't just expect to get paid large amounts because they feel like it.

so bin men take home about 235 quid a week, not to bad.

Are you joking?....thats crap pay!...here the bin men have to collect black bags and they seem pretty efficient at it...its not a job i would like to do...not for £235

Next time you see the bin men why not mention your concerns to them face to face...i would like to see that:D

arknor-as i said its EASY when your doing it on nice flat level streets on estates and roads, you should try it when you going up and down the backs of terraces, and you try and move a 100kg wheelie bin, or get one of yours and fill it half full with water to get an idea of what its like. then do that for 8 hours. as for getting run over it does happen, your working on the road in all weathers and conditions. all it takes is a bus to go past at 40mph very close to the wago and the air pressure can drag you in to the road. like i said here about 3 guys have been killed in the past ten years, more have been clipped by wing mirrors.

jamesrw-if its privatised it will be worse, binmen will get paid min wage and the service will suffer as they will be told not to take any extra rubish and if your bin isnt out on time then tough, you wont be able to call up and get someone to come back the same day or the next day, you will wait till the next time there due.

dowie-same old story the guys at the bottom get there wages cut to ribbens not the the managers or chief execs, and sure theres plenty of people who will do the job, but you'd be surprised how many cant.

NiCkNaMe-a few of us poor thicko's who work on the bins actualy cant find work where we live are or have had our fill of working for idiots. theres actualy two guys working where i am with degree's who have been there over 2 years now. they cant afford to upsticks and move and there just isnt the work here.

for anyone who does think its a doddle i suggest you contact your local council get the agency details and have a go.

I have done, on numerous occasions when I have had to sit behind their lorries blocking the the road in both directions because they are too ****** idle to pull in behind a parked car.

They tend not to say or do anything, just sit there breathing through their mouths.
Are they supposed to be hard or something?

Where in headingley are you? i have noticed parts of headingley are worse than others. Im just off shaw lane.
In a few days theres going to be a rubbish problem on the shawlane/st annes cross roads. Theres a flat and the whole pavement is now stacked with bin bags

Just off Kirkstall lane, opposite the stadium. It's weird. I wonder if the landlord did it.

The smell in some areas and the rubbish is terrible though. It's just about as bad as student moving day on the 1st of July.

contact the council then atphbx, if they are that bad at there jobs you wont be the first person to complain about it.
