Bing - a new way to search

Also, does anybody know anyone who uses Yahoo? I'm struggling to see where that 20% market share comes from. For everyone I know, search is synonymous with Google.

Yahoo! probably has a reasonable market share because it has been around a long time and inertia means that some users may have stuck with it. When I first started using the net that was what I used for searching, and it was also my first email account (first online account of any type in fact). I think they did pretty well because even back then they offered a lot more than just a search engine, they had email, games, news etc. That meant users had a reason to keep going back and thus they'd use the built in search facility.

Or in other words it has benefited from being one of the better early internet 'portals'.

vOn: tried www.givemebackmygoogle.com ?
Or to make it a bit more restricted, search on www.google.co.uk , just UK sites, for:
Code:
"bosch wmf" -inurl:(kelkoo|bizrate|pixmania|dealtime|pricerunner|dooyoo|pricegrabber|pricewatch|resellerratings|ebay|shopbot|comparestoreprices|ciao|unbeatable|shopping|epinions|nextag|buy|bestwebbuys)

I have my own "customized" google tab in forefox now with so many "minuses" it probably filters out half the internet. But the point is - it shouldn't be like that. It should be done on engine level. Instead there is just more and more "partners", more spam and scam every day. You know engine got bad when you search for something that does exist - like, let's say AEG L64840 and you don't get link to real manufacturers website across 50 pages.

I know it's probably because devs at AEG aren't as clever as spam designers at pricerunner, but that's again not the point - engine should be optimized to search real pages, not my searches, or worst yet, websites designed to jump over some odd commercial malarky. It wastes my time, it wastes the idea of search engine, it's even a reason why we all switched to google from other engines at the beginning - because other engines were full of rubbish.

Talking about which, I found out recently altavista still exists and apparently is still considered a business (owned by Yahoo). In what part of the world do people still go there?

Not too sure how I feel on that front - part of me would like to see "raw" searching, which makes no attempt to discount 'exploits' like price comparisons etc. I'm always a bit wary of software which tries to be intelligent and decides gives a biased viewpoint based on some preconception about what I don't want.

That said, the whole concept of a search engines has long been about trying to provide relevant results and I suppose there are only so many ways you can determine relevance. We probably haven't seen any kind of 'pure' searching in a very long time.

Generally speaking I'm very happy with google as it is fast and aside from some rather obscure stuff I can usually find what I'm looking for it I word my query correctly.

Froogle definitely needs some work though, it must have been in beta for at least 5 years now and predates loads of their other ventures like Gmail, Google Maps, iGoogle etc.
