BIOS Update Failed...PC won't start

Have you tried installing the BIOS using the Live Update 6 software?, I recently used that to update my new Mobo with no problems.

Based on this info found by Deano, have you tried downloading the BIOS file and sticking it on a blank USB memory stick (FAT32 formatted presumably) Then try rebooting with the stick - it might be able to read it but you'll probably need to ensure its the raw file for the bios and not the zipped download. Then you can go into BIOS setup and use the same file to reprogram your onboard BIOS chip?

Failing that SPI reprogramming if you have the header on your mobo (as per my previous post) or you could send it off and have the soldered chip replaced (more money of course)

Let us know I'd be keen to see if the mem stick works...

When i go to the MSI page to download the bios it doesn''t load.

If your bios chip is user removable, i.e. not soldered in, then you might be able to purchase replacement from ebay.

Hey,

That's just the .exe file unfortunately.

Copy the file to your USB drive and run it.

From here it is a guessing game as while I'm aware this mobo does feature the ability to boot via a BIOS on USB it might be dependant on having a working BIOS on your main mobo chip.

I could be totally wrong but like I said, try copying the file and running it as presumably it will install the software / new bios to the USB drive. It's anyone's guess as to whether if the install is successful, your afflicted PC will then read it...

Let me know either way other than that you can always send it off like I suggested or get hold of a second hand board..

If you cannot revive it by the USB method you could try MSI support which in the UK is done via repair company called D&J Henry based in Coventry (check the MSI support page) You could ask them if it's possible to send it to be reprogrammed as the Windows update failed? You might get lucky and save some cash.. :)

Thank you so much for your help so far.

Machine doesn't restart if memory stick with bios file is plugged in, still nothing on screen. Keyboard and other peripherals light up though.

hmmm.

I know i could use the options above, that involve getting another chip, but i don't know if my board supports those methods...i don't really have the means to do any soldering etc.

Guys, i think i'm just going to buy a new board/cpu/cooler because my current one isn't that good anyway.... i know it's not the best time because the next gen processors are just round the corner.

What do you guys think?

I need a board that has 2 sys fan slots, 4 RAM slots and enough room for my gtx 970...

I shall give them a call on Monday...no phone support of the weekend.

Happy to help you're very welcome. I've been in the same scenario a few years ago and I know you're kicking yourself for updating in Windows. I certainly did. You live and learn though!

If you are in the mood for upgrade bear in mind a lot of boards these days have dual bios chips so this is the way to go for peace of mind.

All the best ! ;)

Thanks!

Should i open a separate thread for this mobo/cpu/cooler recomendations?

Hope you don't mind me butting in here but:

What is that name of the file you have on the USB stick? It should just be the bios file (E.G. E7750IMS.430) and nothing else on a fat32 formatted usb stick.

USB stick should be plugged into a USB 2.0 port at the back of the motherboard only - make sure it is not in a usb 3 one as these won't work for this, likewise any front ports on your case.

You may need to wait a while for the recovery options to come up.

Hi!, Yes, it is a .430 file..

Tried on usb 2.0 on the back using internal graphics...

nothing on screen.

Without the stick, it contantly reboots which means it's detecting the bios file for sure....but it's not doing anything..

When you say it may take a while...how long? 30 minutes? or longer?

Do you think i should try with the GPU plugged back in?

I've removed it, because i don't want to ruin it whilst fiddling with the mobo etc.

It's a GTX 970 that just came in last week..

Your using internal graphics from the motherboard - have you removed the pcie card?

The recovery screen should come up before 30 minutes has elapsed yes.

Do you know what version of thebios you were on before?
