Hi all,
Just got Bioshock 2 this morning, installed it fine but Games for Windows Live is being a pain.
Keeps saying my account or password is wrong.Always had same e mail account and have changed password today 3 times now,and still won't recognise me.
I have updated G4WL,turned off Firewall and anti-virus and no joy.I can play the game but cannot save it while not on G4WL.
The details of G4WL are as follows-

Network adapter-Local area connection

Internet IP address-not signed in

Local IP address-this has my correct IP

System link address-not active

UPnP-not signed in

Any help greatly appreciated.Am not the best when it comes to computers.Have looked on Windows website but it is just relentless jargon.

Many thanks in advance.

You're lucky, I can't even start the game up. Whenever I try I get a message saying

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Games For Windows - Live is not installed, our (sp) outdated. Please install the latest
Games For Windows - Live from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=128962
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I click on OK and it goes away !

I have installed the latest version of GFW, am currently running it, but still cannot get Bioshock to start. I have n't been asked to enter the activation code yet.

to start.

Thanks for trying to help AWPC,but I really don't understand what I'm meant to be doing or looking for at all.As I said I'm no computer expert.I think it's ludicrous to have all this hassle just to play a game.
The only way I can see me playing the game is by permanently leaving my PC on and praying the game doesn't crash. Not at all happy.

Well first thing you will need to do is log onto your router, normally an ip address such as 192.168.1.1

To find your router's ip address simply open the command promt (winkey+r and type cmd and run that)

Once in the command prompt type ipconfig /all and you should get something like this:

cmdb.png

What your looking for is the default gateway address, in my case it's 192.168.1.254

Now, the next part is router specific so you're going to have to tell us which type of router you have.

Edit: A good place to help you with port forwarding though is http://portforward.com/

Thanks Antar, much appreciated.Have done what you said and made note of default gateway address as appears on the little black screen. My router is a Belkin model no-F5D7632-4.Thanks again.

Okay, type that default gateway address into your internet browser of choice and you should be brought to the logon screen of your router.

From a quick web search

Username: 'admin'
Password: 'admin' or 'password'

seem to be the default settings though if you've set them yourself then they'll obviously be different.

At this point someone is either going to have to give you more detailed instructions specific to your device or you're going to have to delve through the router settings yourself. Basically keep an eye out for NAT and uPNP, enable them if you see them and hopefully everything will work for you. I'm guessing that there should be a facility to enable NAT somewhere either under a WAN heading or perhaps a Firewall heading. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

You have GFW (Games for Windows) or GFWL (Games for Windows Live) already installed? They are two different things

Can't get in to that router screen, just comes up with web site options.Have checked IP several times and is correct.

Sorry, my mistake, I have GFWL running, open on my desktop, latest version downloaded today but I still get the Bioshock error message.

System is Win 7 64 bit home premium.

thanks

Look not being funny mate but the problem is your PC you only have to do this once for any GFWL title. Try the following:

1: Install the latest GFWL Client from here:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=128962

2: Go to your Router and ensure that it has an Open NAT status. Also ensure that the following ports must be open for in-bound and for out-bound connections to work for Games for Windows LIVE:

TCP port 3074
UDP port 88
UDP port 3074

4: Make sure that the UPnP service is started & running on your PC as that controls port forwarding so without it running & started you will get nowhere.

5: Now try again if your still getting the same problem its a lot easier if you go to the GFWL forums as MS have recently employed a lot of support staff to help with things like this but its 99% related to some setting on your firewall or router blocking the GFWL client from working properly.

Below is the Technical Support forums go there and they can help you indepth I could fix this for you in 2 secs but you would have to somehow let me control your PC from mine via the internet & its possible to do so for free & easily but best you get MS to help you further!

Once you configure it once you should never need to touch it again.

Good Luck!

Look at this page they have lots of URLs for most of the popular GFWL issues so your answer is somewhere there otherwise ask on their official forums but 64 bit OSes still have issues which is why I avoid using them for PC gaming!

I'm sure you'd agree that users should not have to do this in order to play a game?

The Games For Windows intiative was supposed to 'save' the PC games industry (not that I ever thought it needed saving). Yet it seems the overbearing nature of the software and the many issues some users have with it seem to outweight the potential benefit of the platform. It should be optional only really or it should be shelved.

I've got into it now.Have clicked to enable UPnP and apply.Gone back in to it and still enabled.NAT already enabled.Still can't get into GFWL.Have a list of ports with option of TCP or UDP but can't work out how to change.(option is LAN or Public)
I know it's my PC,but surely there is a better way for a company to operate for people who aren't experts.
Even trawling through forums since 10 am I am unable to find the full solution.

I agree but the problem is that if the GFWL software did it all for you someone somewhere would threaten legal action so they cannot win can they by adding all the ports & opening the firewall settings etc etc?

For most people it works fine straight away its only if you have security settings/restrictions in place either on your PC/ISP/Router/Firewall/AV Software & do not manually add the settings you get these issues. Many ISP's without telling you reset your NAT status & or block all ports by default so you have to manually open them 1 by 1.

A much bigger issue on Bioshock2 is that 2K appear to have lied to the consumers by scaling back the DRM after the outcry a few weeks ago they appear to have included SSA when they said they would not !!! (SSA=Server Side Authentication which ties the game to your gamertag so you cannot re-sell it but allows unlimited activations on unlimited PC's).

Now that will kick off some interesting issues in the next few days especially for PC gamers who have already tied the game to their gamertag & live in an unsupported country MP & other GFWL features will be unavailable to them. Oops 2K are going to get some outcry there

Thanks for all your help folks, I enabled NAT and the ports but it still did n't fix it.

Since Bioshock could n't detect GFWL, I did what anyone would do. Remove GFWL and then reinstall it. Bioshock now starts up.

Thanks again. Right, where's my diving boots and helmet ? see you in Rapture :)

I know this is probably not much help but you can always create an offline account for G.F.W.L. if you are really desperate to play and continue to have connection trouble.

Just remember you won't get any achievements playing offline.

EDIT: Good to see you've sorted it.

Make UDP & TCP Public for those port numbers only

Look in your GFWL guide interface as that tells you the network status like the screenshot below I made a few months ago to help someone else out:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=15241088&postcount=8

If NAT type=Open & UPnP=available in use then you have other security issues. For instance is the GFWL client in your firewall as an allowed program??
