I am so hacked off right now.

Why does the bioshock demo need a rootkit to avoid copyright infringement. It is a just a demo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And i cannot remove it atm :( vista 64bit does not seem to allow Microsofts RootkitRevealer v1.71 to run.

so whats the problem?

Well the bioshock demo installs a rootkit program that will scan my computer and registry for whatever it wants. This is a DEMO. DEMOS do not need any copyright protection at all.

They claim the rootkit is for activation purposes when you buy the game. Which is why i am totally hacked off why does a demo need activation?!?

maybe they just got lazy and simply got the full version of the game installer, and removed everything but the first portion of the game, thus leaving rootkits and all in the demo installer.

ok so it not a rootkit by definition, but it still begs the question, why does a Demo need a program to activate it. And also i have no way of uninstalling this authentication secuROM program where i can uninstall bioshock (which i have done)

Sony Rootkit was NUKED long ago by MS with a Beta build of Windows defender, and LavaSoft made a Plug In for Lavasoft Ad-Aware 6.X, Sony had to call back all the Audio CD's and also got balls kicked. :D

This is what makes me unhappy about it as well. I don't want Securom on my PC. It wouldn't be so bad if it was uninstalled when the game is but nope, they make it so you can't remove it. I refuse to purchase any games that use it.

Taken from Wikipedia.

Known problems
* The version of SecuROM that comes with Armed Assault, S.T.A.L.K.E.R (European release only), Neverwinter Nights 2 , Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (patched to v1.04), Tomb Raider Anniversary (demo and Full version), Overlord and Bioshock(demo and Full version) prevents the game from running at all if Process Explorer, a free tool offered by Microsoft, has been run since the previous reboot.
* Certain games installed using SecuROM will prevent other select games from working correctly, and will continue to do so even after game is uninstalled

yes its going to take over your computer and then the world

Well, maybe you're happy to allow companies to install all manner of un-deletable crap on your system without asking you first, but I'd hazard a guess you're in the minority!

So now people have stopped using starforce they are going to turn on securom instead?

All copy protection is evil eh

I'm guessing you're the sort of person who scans headlines in the tabloids and believes everything being said at face value and without question.

Bioshock installs SecuROM which - whilst a bit "lame" - isn't a rootkit. Plenty of games, demos, etc install SecuROM, it's a copy protection tool.

WTF. I really don't see what the big deal is here.. Is it going to swallow your Vista Install or somthing , Christ, so much fuss over nothing

No i'm just not paranoid, I really dont think anyone with any sense could care less about some copy protection
