BioShock. Which platform to get?

Can't say I had much problem getting involved in the storyline for KOTOR, Mafia, Deus Ex, Max Payne etc on the PC :) Max Payne and Mafia in particular had cinematic qualities.

Then again, my monitor was a lot bigger than my TV at the time...

This may sound stupid... is it a DX10 capable game then?

I'm only on XP, i know it'll run on DX9 but, i want the full bell's and whistles, hate having to sacrifice visuals for performance!

Seems the 360 may have to be the machine of choice!

Yes it is a DX10 game. But i think it will still look good on DX9. The 360 version will look similar to the DX9 version on the PC, maybe slightly better.

360's DX10 though isnt it, or am i getting my facts muddled

I might get both, just because I'm weird like that. :o I really want the 360 version primarily, but on the other hand I feel I have to get the PC version too, as I have spent a fortune on my PC (core duo, 8800, 4gb ram, etc) and need to justify the purchase.

Im getting PC version, want to play it in DirectX 10 :). But probably means me buying a better soundcard to get descent quality/effects, I don't think an Audigy 2 will cut it.

Yeah i'll probably end up getting both tbh, in the long run. As i'll want something pretty to look at when i upgrade my PC to Vista and a DX10 card in due course.

But for the mean time, thanks for the input chaps, gonna go for the Xbox 360 version for now i think. :)

PC version as I want to play in 5.1 and have the fancy visuals.

'Hunching' over a PC desk has always been preferred for me, the only games I like sitting on a couch far away from the screen for is games like Tekken and Pro Evo.

I just don't think an FPS is suited to laid back gaming.

It won't look better, I mean unless your PC can't max it out.

Word, the biggest thing when playing a game for me is the sound, screen size doesn't really come into it when you're sitting about 30cm away from the screen.

The above and the fact that they're actually designing the controls/gameplay differently for each platform leaves me with no doubt I'll be getting it on 360.
Controls aren't great on the 360 apparently though, sounds like a fairly hotkey intesive game. :o

Hopefully not as many keys as I used to play WoW.

Well the 360 isn't completely DX10. Its an advanced Dx9, DX9.5 if you will. It has some of the features from DX10 and could probably simulate it. I think it will look just as good as the PC version maxed out on DX9.

Well with PC you can tweak the settings and enhance the quality with more levels of AA and AF so I can't really see it looking just as good if you get what I mean.

I don't think any of the DX10 features will be on the 360 either, iirc the only DX10 feature used on a 360 so far was the MSAA on Gears Of War. (I think, something to do with the shaders, deferred shaders or something, UT3 uses them and can't have AA on DX9 or something)

Why is it that the first 'big' DX10 enabled game is coming out and everyone automatically thinks that DX9 is No Swearing!? It will look ace on a DX9 card as have all DX9 games.

It will look better on the PC in DX9 than on the 360. They have used shader model 3 effect for the water. I quote from Bioshock's water programmer:

"One of the features we are taking advantage of with pixel shader 3.0 is the vertex texture fetch. We have used it to create interactive water effects"....blah blah blah - you get the picture.

Last time I checked most of the latest DX9 cards, from the last year and a half at least, have shader model 3.

OP: It will look ace on your machine. If it did not work well on high end DX9 hardware then the dev's will be really shooting themselves in the foot. If aiming with a pad narks you as much as it narks me then get the PC version.

The whole dx9/dx10 thing is a bit of a strange one in any case, given that it is not only dicatated by hardware but also software (i.e. whether you have Vista or not).

Personally I don't reckon we will see a big difference in graphical quality between dx9 and dx10 in the near future - it simply won't be worth developers spending a lot of time on dx10 until such time as a lot of users have access to it. By and large the dx10 games which look great will likely look fantastic in dx9 mode as well.

What will be interesting is to see what the first game is that REQUIRES dx10. I mean, cards like the gf4 aren't fully dx8.1 compliant (no PS1.4), but it wasn't until years later with games like BF2 where people started running into trouble. Likewise ATIs x8*0 series isn't dx9c compliant (no PS3) but again until the likes of SC:DA that we have seen a requirement for it.

I see no reason what so ever not to get it on the PC. I find PC gaming better in pretty much every way, especially for FPS games.

Will run great on an x1900 considering they recommend a 7900 GT, x1900 is a lot faster. :)

Ill be running it in Dx9 as well. :p

It will run great, just not on highest settings :)

Nah, im not gona bother with Vista just for 1x game. :p

Exactly. It is all very well getting a DX10 card, which are now getting more affordable. However it is then that you quickly remember that you have to then spend another £80 at least to get Vista. And then you ask yourself, well do you want to? It may well be needed to run your latest games, however - will it run your old favorites?
