Bioware Closing Down

They shoulda done more self-flagellation after failguard like the whole dev team on a live stream doing pushups to fail

maybe gamers would have forgave them.

Also putting surgery scars in a game is just weird ideology.... MALE AND FEMALE exist as choices... if you identify as MALE OR FEMALE... just pick the one you identify as... do games really need mental gymnastics.

Your not supposed to be playing yourself in agame anyway... your supposed to be playing as te character in the game it;s called escapism and role play

My name isnt gordon freeman so I can;t play the half life series FACEPALM, no females played halflife cos you play as a man right.... WTF are these people thinking

If your not a plumber you cant play mario, and rescuing a princess is sexist so girls never got to play it

It's not a shame, BioWare shutting down is a good thing! The only other thing that would have worked is if they fired every employee and started from scratch

Game companies shutting down is never good thing. Especially in today's economy and mass layoffs in the industry. Regardless of what people thought about their games.

so they went woke and then broke?
More like 'Go EA, go away'?

As someone who has worked at several large studio networks, fundamentally it just doesn't ever work when studios get swalled up. The interference that comes in from outside the previously nuclear studio just dilutes and confuses the creative vision for the game. Ubisoft was horrible for editorial teams sticking their nose in and having 'opinions' on games in development that you realistically have little choice but to acquiesce too.

If you're going to buy a studio, you need to value the development team and trust their vision, otherwise what are you even buying?

Anyway, it's clear the whole concept of massive studio networks is no longer economically viable and the industry is going to realign to coalesce around smaller, more focused teams doing their thing well. Rather than gigantic multinational game factories trying to be everything to everyone.

Not surprising. They went from never having made a bad game, to making garbage after EA bought it.

You only have to look at the sort of people staffing the company then vs now...

They did indeed go woke, then went broke.

Agreed

Game studios seem to be closed almost as soon as a game ships now, and then the developers who worked their arses off don't get the metacritic score related bonuses they are owed.

Is it? they've had 4 releases in the past 12 years (DA:I, ME:A, Anthem and DA:V) ranging from massive flop to being so poorly received it killed the dev houses that made it. Ive read some folks are sad they wont get to see ME5 now, I'm not given the **** churned out by Bioware.

Hard disagree, if anything we need more. The games industry went into overdrive in recent years as it (especially with covid) and so many talentless hacks got jobs when they had no business being anywhere near it, purge them all as far as I'm concerned.

Mass Effect trilogy, SWTOR, Dragon Age: Origins... garbage?

The doctors took EA's money 19 years ago. No one is owed creative success for life but you might get financial backing while you look good.

Joking aside, I’m not saddened by this. BioWare has been brain dead for over a decade and they have just turned off the life support.

None of the people who made the good games for BioWare have worked at BioWare for a long time. TBH it ended really when the Docs sold.

That’s always the way, isn’t it, despite studios doing the “From the studio that brought you <Insert epically good game name here>” a decade after the folks that made said game left.

At least they gave us the gift of non-binary / transgender character creation options before being canned.

But yeah as others have said Bioware died ages ago. Limited tears shed tbh

While EA technically acquired BioWare in 2007, the actual ownership didn't transfer until 2008 and EA's meddling didn't really begin until around 2010-2011, projects such as Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 1 + 2 were largely underway before the acquisition.

The first instance was probably DA2, which was rushed out to fill in space prior to The Old Republic launching. Them launching a huge budget MMO was a very questionable decision to boot, but everyone and their mother was chasing the success of WoW back then.

The last legitimately good game Bioware made was ME2, and that was very likely the last game they made with minimal interference from EA. I've said this before, but I didn't get on with Mass Effect 3, it had a host of problems and I'm not just talking about the awful original endings or the fact you were initially forced to play the awful tacked on multiplayer to even get the "best" one.

No company nowadays can afford to lose hundreds of millions of dollars on vanity projects where the leads care more about "educating" us about sexual/identity politics than making a fun game that people will buy and play. We've seen EA, Microsoft, Ubisoft, Sony, etc get their lunches eaten by smaller, leaner studios that don't have massive franchises, but they do have talent, skills, creativity and above all want to make their games fun to play for their customers.

That is something the triple-A studios have forgotten because the bean-counters at the top just want to maximise profits and got fooled into hiring activists to do it. Yes it's sad for people to lose their jobs, (except for those at the top who hamstrung the actual workers with their "everything is politics" or "gouge the customer for more money" view), but they aren't owed our money. They have to earn it, not just expect us to buy their slop.

In the end, the customer always wins, and in this case Bioware died because they no longer produced enough value to justify their existence despite being given far more chances than most other companies would get. It's not like this wasn't predicted from the outside for a long time, and yet they kept running off that cliff regardless. The people in charge at Bioware were the authors of their own fate, and didn't care, so why should we? Nostalgia, activism and rose-tinted glasses don't pay the bills.

We also live in an insane time where people think every game is somehow "woke"

I saw it on the Steam discussion boards for Star Wars: Galactic Racer and I've seen it on these forums recently where people thought the latest Gears of war release was "woke" because it had a female character...

Too many people live their lives on or through the Internet.

Didnt these people play Gears 5?!?!?
