Birthday build log

so what games would be best for showing off the graphics that are for now free?

www.thehunter.com

its a game where you hunt different animals. its completely free to sign up as a guest, where you will be able to hunt on one of the 4 maps (loggers point), and you will be able to hunt one of the about 10 animals (mule deer).

its not the most exciting game, but the graphics are amazing (very close to unmodified crysis on maximum), and it runs really smoothly.

to download the game, go here: http://static.thehunter.org/download/files/theHunterSetup.exe
(sometimes there are problems downloading it through the launcher, and i dont know if the 3rd party download sites have the latest update on them, so that link is the best way to go)

Well I just played Half Life 2 for about half an hour all on max with 4x the two options (I didn't really know what they meant so I went for the middle options :p. All looks good, no frame rate dropping in combat or anything.
During it the highest temp my CPU reached was 45 degrees and GPU 62. Do these sound like normal temperatures as I am looking to overclock the two at some point this week.

I ran prime 95 for an hour just to see what max temps I was getting at stock. Got a max of 51 degrees although every time I looked it was at 49. Its then at 29 degrees idle. Not really pleased with this tbh. Can I increase the CPU cooler fan in the BIOS or something? I have seen people with idle temps below 24 degrees using the same cooler.
I was hoping to overclock to 4.2ghz and this only leaves me 11 degrees more than I am getting at stock on load as the max temp is 62 as well as the fact that I don't really want to be going as high as 62 maybe like 58 to be safe.
Does thermal paste set over time or something? Might my temps drop a bit? I suppose having the cooler pointed the way it is isn't helping but that can't be changed :/

51C is really good for a phenom ;)

i get ever so slightly better than that myself, but then i would be kinda peeved if i didnt, seeing that i spent a good 50% more than you did on my cooler

Really? Maybe I'm just looking at people who have really good case air flow and case fans then :/
So I could think about a decent overclock then? It just seems so close to the max temp allowed already. I suppose it's just about trying it and see what temps I get and hope I don't fry the chip in the process. But still.. Can I increase CPU fan speed anyway? It's at 2000RPM at the moment according to the box

Got there in the end then buddy ;)

I look forward to hearing your verdict once you get your games installed. For the record, tell dad BF3 will only run at 30fps max on consoles PC is 60 fps ;)

Don't get me wrong it's a classic in both gameplay and graphics but it's nearly 7 years old now.

Beat your dad in the argument with some more recent games. The Witcher 2, Crysis..

Is it capped to 60 fps on PC? or is that just about what I will probably be able to run it at?

Anyway I have a new problem. When I am on the steam window watching a download it goes up to full speed. If I then go to another window, when I go back to the steam window, the download speed has dropped off to something ridiculous like 20KB/s, as soon as I go on to the window however it starts rising again. This is really annoying as obviously I was hoping that while I am downloading games I could be doing other things at the same time on the computer. Is this some kind of setting?

I'm also quite enjoying HL2: DM at the moment. Will do me fine until the Summer Sale comes along, otherwise I'm just wasting money if I buy now I suppose.

Sounds more like a coincidence, or a UI thing (UI reporting the wrong speed when out of focus). Should just download at whatever speed.

Can use Wireshark to trace the packets and bandwith, *if you really must*.

No I don't think it's capped, merely that 60fps is meant to be the accepted standard for a smooth gameplay experience which the PC can do. The xbox and PS3 are capped to 30fps, dad doesn't realise obviously that the xbox360 is essentially a 6 year old "custom" tri-core gaming computer. It's not even fair to compare them really ;)

Not sure about your steam problem. Is it possible there are other devices on the network causing the available bandwith to fluctuate?

I don't think that it is another program using the bandwidth as I can minimize the window and open it for like a second and the speed had dropped to basically nothing and has to slowly climb back up again. So annoying.

I meant is someone else using your internet connection? Girlfriend, parents whatever? Could just be a coincidence, minimising the window shouldn't effect it, hell windows update does that by itself while it downloads!

Ok Now I am having trouble getting to the part in the ios where I can increase the multiplier. (I was just going to increase it by one for now before I can be bothered to properly overclock) but I can't find any guides for my motherboard and I have had a good look through the bios. There are option to increase the voltage of the CPU but I don't think i need to do that yet.

And no, no one else is using it, it is definitely to do with minimizing the window but I can't find any settings in steam which would affect this.

EDIT: I found some videos of other Gigabyte boards with similar looking BIOS and they all have options in the MIT bit that mine doesn't to increase the multiplier. Does this board support overclocking? I thought basically all the AM3 boards did. :(

Now I have another problem, this time with youtube. The internet speeds I am getting are the same if not a little better than I did on my laptop according to speedtest.net (maybe it had a **** wireless card in or something.)
Anyway on my old laptop I used to be able to watch any videos in 360p or 480p straight off without having to wait for them to load at all, some 720p videos as well. Now I have to have a 4 minute video paused for about 30 seconds to wait for it to buffer before I can watch it all the way through on 360p!!
This is even more annoying and before you ask, the two problems aren't related, I don't download games while watching videos so they aren't affecting each other.

I find youtube spotty. Sometimes it's fine, other times, it take a while to buffer.

I also found steam bandwidth to vary quite a bit. I don't have the problems you are experiencing though. Best you can do is bring up the bandwidth monitor in steam and keep an eye on it while doing other things.

It's also possible Win 7 is downloading updates and screwing with your bandwidth.

As for your board and overclocking,

http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=353833

If that's true then it sucks. It's an Nforce board, so it's bound to suck anyway.

Did you get the latest bios btw?

EDIT : Looking at the manual, there seem to be no control over the CPU overclocking :/

Aww fail, wish I had known that before I bought it :p

And for youtube, it seems consistently bad whereas i was consistently good on my laptop. I had more fun building the computer than using it with all these little problems coming up.

Oh well, all this will do is make me want to upgrade mobo+CPU even sooner, maybe around ivy bridge release time, even if just for Sandy bridge prices to go down, maybe check out Bulldozer although I have lost all hope of them coming out and matching SB now.
