Birthday build log

I dont actually know what The Windows 7 service pack is

Where do I get it from and what exactly does it do? Google told me I might need to defrag the registry so I downloaded the suggested program and it said there was no need to do it when I opened the program, I suppose not being such a new computer.

I'm getting that now, thanks Stulid.

But... Just checked the processes in task manager. Some of them have an asterix next to them then it says 32, this includes google chrome. I'm assuming this means 32bit. Should I have a 64bit google chrome? Could this be the problem?

Ah I already had the service pack, must have got it without realising. That isn't the problem anyway. I'll get firefox and see what it's like on that. Also, iPlayer works fine so I don't know if that helps in working out what's wrong :/

Now here is something interesting, videos are loading as fast/slightly faster in 720p then 360p or 480p. Obviously I never tried 720p cause it was already struggling at the lower resolutions. I still have to wait for it to load a bit but not as much. This pretty much confirms it isn't my internet's fault. hmmmm strange...

youtube has being going very slow for me for the last 2 weeks, was using FF with virgin media 50 line.
Dont know if that helps any :\

Well I am now loading 720p videos as I watch them, way quicker than 360p for some reason.
Anyway.. new problem :)
I had previously been using the sound through the TV which I am using as a monitor which uses 'Nvidia HD sound' and it sounded fine.
Now I have plugged headphones into the front heaphone jack the sound is awful. I have already realised how bad the mobo is but surely the onboard sound can't be this bad. It sounds muffled, is incredibly quiet, has a lot of echo and makes listening to music unbearable, any way I can use the Nvidia graphics card as a sound card too as it obviously has some kind of sound technology in it?

Theres no way of putting headphones into the Nvidia card, when you plug the headphones in do you switch the speaker setup in the audio control panel from say a 5.1/7.1 system to a headphone setup?

does your TV have a headphone socket?

It does but the headphone cable doesn't reach, I have the tower next to me chair, I guess I'll have to get an extension lead or something.

Well it becomes a 2 channel format automatically according to the settings but now you mention it, it does sound like I'm just hearing one part of the song and the rest is just muffled almost like one headphone is doing one part of a 5.1/7.1 system. The settings don't seem to match up with what I am hearing.

EDIT: Sorry to mess you all about but I just went to balance and as soon as I clicked to change the sliders (although I didn't make any changes to the sliders) the audio became clearer. I think it just wasn't doing what it was meant to and when I clicked the option it like refreshed or something.

OK now it's messed up again. basically, I have found the setting which can fix it each time but I don't want to have to tweak it every time I change video.
If you go to playback devices, then go on the headphones properties, then go on the levels tab and click balance. Some videos only sound good when the first bar is completely full and the second empty, some only work when both are completely full, if I don't stick to this, I get the weird muffled distant which makes some parts of each song louder than others, mostly the vocals hardly audible over the music.

Have you got a night time mode on?

Either in the audio control panel or in the actual media player software.

Nope I don't think so, not in the control panel and the sound is the same coming from multiple sources e.g. games, youtube, VLC

I suppose I will just have to keep audio manager open and just change between options when necessary, there appears to be two types of audio

Would it be worth opening up the case and checking the HD audio cable thing is plugged into the motherboard right? although I would have though that if it wasn't correctly connected then the sound would never work.

Aww well, no idea how to fix but I'll get an extension cable for headphones so I can plug them into my TV soon anyway, I'll get one at the same time as I order a keyboard which can handle more than two keys pressed down at once, HL: DM is hell without being able to diagonally walk and jump/sprint.

Anyway I haven't really said it but big thanks to all the people that helped with any of my threads about this build, especially to Stulid, Reaper, Olivier and even Honosuseri (despite suggesting a motherboard which doesn't overclock, I'll forgive you :p)

well, if nothing else works, you can get a 5m extension cable pretty cheaply. just make sure you get a decent quality one because you dont want the cable ruining your sound

I was as surprised as you that you couldn't atleast set the multiplier or indeed define the CPU manually.

I wouldn't worry too much over the overclocking. It would have been nice to get the CPU up'd to 965BE spec but oh well. On your budget you were always going to have a "Budget" mobo and a safe expected OC would be 3.8Ghz, expecting 4 or higher on a budget mobo is ambitious. It's cheapness let you get a better spec'd GPU and an X4 CPU for your uses that made sense.

A £30ish mobo is pretty much disposable to be fair. If you want to overclock seriously and have more features from the mobo (audio, No. of RAM slots etc) then consider upgrading it later on. Keep an eye on the mid to top range AM3+ mobos, they support your CPU and will take bulldozer CPUs too. The new chipset is allowing SLI and Xfire, which helps as you really wanted the Nvidia 560 in your spec.

You've had your b'day money, think what to do with the xmas cash ;) How much did it all come to in the end then?

*EDIT* p.s about your sound. You should run the speakers (tv in your case) through the rear of the case. The front connector is used for headphones really (with option of mic input there), the OS will most likely change the audio settings to suit. If you are outputting audio to the tv it stands to reason you are the video too. So why not just use a HDMI cable? It does send audio too, would make sense to buy a longer HDMI cable, i think more useful than a 3.5mm extension cable.

Yeah, tha't pretty low not allowing multiplier tweaks in BIOS, while allowing Vcore control :/

Motherboard nowadays automatically 'sense' what's being plugged. that can be a pain if you plug in a headphone and it's recognised as speakers or vice versa.

Yeah I know, I heard that there is one set of AMD CPUs coming out at some time this year (September?) and then within like 9 months, they will be replaced by another set. I'm assuming this is to put one out which can possibly compete with Sandy Bridge then get some out for when Ivy Bridge drops. I don't know if I really want a CPU with a 9 month shelf life unless it is somehow way better than SB, wouldn't have thought so with the delays though. SO basically I'm thinking when the CPUs come out the actual AM4 mobos will come out making AM3+ cheaper right? Then I can get an AM3+ mobo and then decide where to go with Bulldozer from there.

At the same time, I am not comitting myself to AMD which is why i am glad the mobo was so cheap, now if BD is the pile of **** that some people are expecting then SB won't be such a big loss.

About the sound, hearing it through the TV speaker is fine as I do use HDMI, the problem is listening through headphones through the front audio jack, it's kinda sorted now I just need to tweak the sliders if it sounds weird then it goes back to sounding normal.

Ah well, not too bothered now about the overclocking, it's not like I have been struggling with anything, I would have just been doing it now cause I could.

And the thing is it does recognize them as headphones it still makes them sound really weird though. Might be a fault but I can manage as I use the speakers from the TV more often anyway, headphones are only for late at night.
